Sometimes I stumble across stuff researching other posts.
The year is 1962 and quoting the article lined below, “Will the Mets make money this year?”
Ah 1962….my grandfather’s old Mets Police Newsletter was mailed out once a month. He would write excitedly of how the Mets honored the old Giants and Dodgers (they had an Olde Timers’ Day), how great the uniforms looked (he particularly liked the blue caps) and how excited he was about the move to Flushing Meadows Stadium (note that there were to be No Obstructed Views, a technology lost to the 1960’s)…although the $3.50 price for box seats was an insult to working class Mets fans!
Of course, ownership in 1962 was easily able to make money and still not charge an arm and leg because there was no free agency and the players played for whatever you wanted to pay them. NOBODY made anywhere near $1m/yr then.
No Little League diamond under Coogan’s Bluff. The Section Five fraternity rent asunder. Shannon, you often make me laugh and always make me think, but this time you damn near have made me cry.
I enjoyed the link to the NY Times article. I remember $3.50 box seats and going to twi-night twin bills and sitting in GA for $1.25. Imagine watching two ball games for 5 quarters. I also remember going for free with Borden’s Milk coupons. Was wondering if the other entries in the Mets logo competiton were posted anywhere. I would like to see what we passed up.
