Terry Collins is the new Mets manager and I’m OK

Here’s how work will go tomorrow.  I will see my coworker.  She’ll look at me and say “Terry Collins.”   I’ll say “Terry Collins” and go back to my desk.

Metsville is not excited tonight, but we’ve known this was coming and we knew we’d feel this way.

For me, I’m not angry.  I’m just kind of nothing.   Terry Collins is the manager, can I turn off the computer now?

I think back to “Clueless Joe” being hired in the Bronx and I hope the Mets have hired Clueless Terry and he will be the one who leads the franchise back to the championship.  Several times.

I’m struggling to even write this post.  I have to acknowledge the news but I have nothing to say.  It’s Terry Collins.

Some factions of the Metsiverse are already in negative mode.   There’s already talk of Terry not coming back in two years.   Talk of Wally Backman being the next manager.   STOP.

We’ve had enough negativity these past few years, and yes I have contributed my share.  Let’s at least wait for loss number one before we jump ship.

Tonight we begin a new era.  Terry Collins we look for you to lead us out of the wilderness.  Don’t let us down.  We’ve got your back.

I’m not excited, but I’m game.  Who’s with me?

  1. Wilpons are the living definition of timid. Otherwise knows as a Gentleman’s Third Place next year. Yay.

    1. The problem started out when they knew they wanted to revamp the team, and suddenly everyone started making suggestions. Boras suggested the Mets should go into the FA market aggressively. Selig suggested Sandy Alderson. The Mets willed over their franchise to Selig, and now the A’s/Pods/Brewers are managing the Mets.

This is what the Mets fanbase gets for roughing up poor Jeffy. Jeffy was reputedly pulling for our man Wally Backman.

  2. Collins is merely a piece of Sandy’s puzzle. Simply put, the Mets needed a disciplinarian and Collins is that. If they win, I will love him, if they lose but show some guts and begin to gain some respect next year I will be happy. It feels a lot like 1982 again. Now if I could just get in my Mustang and go get Nachos and a big gulp before the Giant game I would be all set!

  3. And one other thing, the only guy I want to see wearing #1 at Citi next year is the Mookster!! He has more class in his little finger than they had in the whole clubhouse last year.

  4. WOW! Terry Collins. I am all in a tizzy. Yeah, right. This is disgusting. Nothing like giving the team a new direction. And hey, Dave Wallace back as pitching coach, really? Warthen did a bad job, it was all of the bad pitching the Mets had last year, oh no, wait…they could not get a big hit. Sorry. When and if they get rid of the Walter Reed Three, then I will think of something positive to say about the new GM (yup, hired Sandy Koufax’s friend…no connection to the owner at all). Ridiculous. Can’t wait to see what crumbs they throw the PR way. Wait, why not bring back Jeff Torborg as the bench coach, or the first base coach. Stupid, just stupid. I am going to watch the Giants get lit up…be the perfect capper to the sports day.

  5. Doesn’t matter who the Mets manager is. They could have any one of us in there and the team isn’t going to win until they overhaul the core.

  6. I think that any “Mets fans” who can’t at least wait until April to unleash the negativity should find a new team to root for. Terry Collins was not my ideal choice, but he does deserve a fair chance. So does Sandy Alderson.

    1. Paul,

I was trying to be positive…then I read this from the AP story and bad thoughts popped into my head:

“Star pitcher Johan Santana(notes) is expected to miss the start of the season following shoulder surgery, while Jason Bay(notes), signed to a $66 million contract last offseason, will be coming back from a season-ending concussion sustained in late July. Outfielder Carlos Beltran(notes), slowed by a bad knee, is owed $18.5 million in the final season of his seven-year deal.

In the bullpen, closer Francisco Rodriguez is coming off thumb surgery for an injury sustained in an August fight with his girlfriend’s father outside the family lounge at Citi Field.”

      Oh, it’s baaaaad.

  7. Intro press conference is supposed to be an upbeat confident, ‘lets feel good about the club’ day.

This guy comes in with baggage that he has to defend on day one. Again they haven’t lost a game in 2011 yet but I see this ending badly. 2011 isa lostyear anyway so lets all keep the expectations at a .500 club – at best.

Torre was caled clueless Joe but was never accused of have his players openly petition for his dismissal.

  8. As a Mets fan of 37 years I applaud the decision of the new front office in selecting the managerial candidate that they have determined gives the Mets the best chance in developing into a winning franchise.

  9. Hmmm – ever since the big bloggers call, the A-list of Mets bloggers has been suspiciously “cool, fine, mellow” with whatever crapola comes down the pike. Way too much “I trust Sandy” chanting as if Aldersonism is new religion. C’mon, this is a pretty big pile o’ crap for Mets fans to handle here.

As osh41 correctly notes, this guy starts with excess baggage – it’s a poor Wilpon-dominated choice (Collins is Sandy Koufax’s guy and Fred does what Sandy says). Alderson is already under the Wilpon thumb. Another disaster for the team we can’t help but root for…
