Man oh man do I wish Tom had made it all the way back in the Summer of 1987. One more ride with The Franchise would have been awesome. Here’s big Tom Seaver fan Dick Young in an article from 1987.
Lou Gorman didn`t renew Tom Terrific. Rather, he said how about half. Seaver said how about sticking it, or something to that effect, and took his release. He figured some club would want him more than that. He figured wrong. There were deterrents. Not only is he 42, but the body is starting to go. He tore cartilage in his right knee, so while the other Red Sox were playing the playoffs and World Series, Seaver was having pieces of gristle sucked out of the injured joint.
He says the knee is fine now. He says he has been doing more than watching television. If he is sound, the Mets will have made quite a catch.
