I love this shot. A few things jump out…
– look at the message on the scoreboard. Those used to go up one letter at a time, 80’s video game style. If you wanted an X you had to scroll A,B,C,D…X. There would often be tons of typos.
– I love the distribution of the crowd. I wonder if it was a camp day?
– note that the American League scores are on the right hand side of the scoreboard.
– the Herald Tribune went out of business in 1966. Advertising at Shea cannot save you.
the distribution of the crowd would suggest some sort of special ticket price or giveaway..notice no one sitting in upper reserve. back in those days you did not dare sneak down or sit where you did not belong. way to many ushers who actually checked your ticket and kicked you out of areas you did not belong.
How many different pictures make up this one? Strange to see the batter swinging, yet the ss, 3b and runner appear to be another shot. Love those days at Shea though.
How about the fact that no one is in the outfield.
The Mets are batting (note the guy in the Mets on-deck circle & batboy near by and the 1B coach), yet the 3B and SS seem to Mets players taking the field, while the runner is in a road uniform
2 pictures make up this shot..
love this shea pic !
notice no plexiglass in front of the bull pen!
the next year, the reingold sign said either you have it or you don’t.
when the official scorer had to decide if a ball was a hit or error, the letter “E” or”H” would light up in the word either !
another reason for the sparse looking crowd,
the world fair was going on next door.
the score board in the lower left corner displayed a double header scheldued for the next day. makes me think the pic was taken on a saturday afternoon
This game was payed on Saturday July 11, 1965. The Sunday double header must have been rained out, as there is no record of it…good news, as a drought warning was on the scoreboard. The all star break then followed. Number 10 batting on the scoreboard was Rusty Staub.

“shea stadium do it your self tour”
looking at old pics of shea bought back a child hood memory.
since i lived a short distance from shea,my mother sent me to pick up tix for agame. i went into the lobby asked the switch board operator to use the rest room. she said “over there to the right”
i went to the wrong door and ended up in the players lounge (t.v.set and a table with four chairs)
i go through another door. im in the club house unnoticed.
i go through another door, im in the tunnel and walked into the kiners korner studio.
can’t stop now. gotta find the dougout.
walked through another door and there was a cat walk that led to the dougout. i sat there for a few minutes !
this was 1970.
