MetsPolice: not calling Wilpons ‘the devil’

Ok this should be a fun discussion….an article in the Wall Street Journal about how Mets fans are disgusted and giving up on the team and all that.

So some interesting things come out of this:

1.  I come across as the rational one.  Or some of you will say I sold out.

2.  “Shark” is my dog.  I’ve occassionally mentioned this before…I never set out to become a Mets blogger, started on blogger using my “disposable” Google email account, but here we are 3 years in and now I’m Shannon Shark.  In the end it doesn’t matter, you either like what I write or you don’t.  If you’re an Indiana Jones fan, “I named the dog Indiana.”  Anyway enough on that.

So while some other fans are quite upset, here are my rational quotes:

Not just for immediate matters—like the looming question of what the team will do about shortstop Jose Reyes, whose contact expires at the end of this season—but what could happen if the team did defy expectations and remain in contention late into the season where it might behoove them to make a move at the trade deadline

“That’s where it’s going to get really interesting,” said Shannon Prior, who runs the blog metspolice.com. “I do worry.”

Though they’re few in number, there are some Mets fans who say they’re perfectly content with the status quo. “The devil you know is better than the devil you don’t,” Mr. Prior said. “I’m not calling them the devil,” he added. “I’m comfortable with the Wilpon ownership.”

Also of note is this…

“We love our fans, appreciate their passion and continue to demonstrate our commitment to them by investing in the team with one of the highest payrolls in Major league Baseball and one of the most fan-friendly ballpark experiences in the sport,” the team said in a statement. “Like our fans, we are excited about the start of the season.”

I’ll be there opening day.  I’m wearing my awesome Mets jacket today.  I’ll continue to be positive or critical depending on my mood or what the team is doing.  I stand by what I have said here previously (and told the Journal) that I don’t think anyone really knows what’s going on with Madoffgate.

I am kinda sad that my “clownfest is over” quote didn’t make it.  I also observed there are two million Mets fans, two million Yankees fans and two million front-runners.   I was asked if the Mets will sell tickets and I said that if they are in first in September the place will be sold out.  We all know this to be true.

Man it’s so weird to be the positive one.

    1. Don’t worry, the Mets will announce that with the 2012 season black and orange will be the official colors and I’ll go back to my tantrum ways.

I think Omar’s decisions are more the problem than Fred’s…of course Fred hired Omar, so there’s a circle of blame.

I don’t recall Wilpon Rage around 2000. It really kicked in with the Dodgers thing.

      1. I wasn’t paying as close attention, but I do recall “freddy coupon” comments before I started my blog (2007), so don’t think it was just the Dodger/Ebbets/Citi thing.
