Fat lady warming up for Mets: This is gonna take .590 ball starting today

I’m out on my deck for the first time all year, and yep I’m wearing a Mets sweatshirt (Blue with Mets in white, the one with Mets in orange is in the wash) so it’s not like I’m not still a fan but…

It’s what, April 17th? Even if my worst fears i didn’t see this coming. I don’t know what to build off. I don’t know which pitcher to rally behind. I don’t know which batters to root for.

I look at the math. It terrifies me.

6 back. Teams to pass. A week of wins away from .500

Want 85 wins? Time to go .551 the rest of the way playing 81-66 ball.

86-61 for 90 wins. Thats .585 ball 91 wins got you the WC in 2010.

I know one of you will tell me the 1894 Superbas were 32 out with 36 left to play (or some other unlikely rare scenario) but stilly won, but these games in April matter folks.

Jokes aside but there may not be meaningful games in April!

This is not good. Not good at all. If any team ever needed an early mini 4 game winning streak it’s this one.

  1. It is actually kind of sad! Tickets selling for $4.00 on stub hub! I feel bad for the “Real Fans” who bought season tickets and plans!

What about the ushers and Vendors who will be working and nobody will be there.

Would you really want to go to a Met vs Astro or Mets vs D-Back game this next homestand?

Not only are they playing meaningless games already, they are playing them against meaningless teams!

    How low can you go?

  2. I have tickets for four games this week. My plan on Tue. and Sun., Free tickets form the Mets for the Coat Drive on Thurs. Metspolice’s tix on Sat. I will be taking pics and tweeting the crowd shots from each game.

  3. you can’t do math in April. it doesn’t work.

They could play .880 ball for the next two weeks and suddenly the ‘% the rest of the way’ looks doable.

Also, they still control their own destiny, to use that cliche.

  4. What the h#ll is wrong with David Wright? He is a human strikeout 90% of the time.

    1. Wright’s Ks jumped considerably and have stayed high since the Mets moved into Citi Field. There was a lot of discussion at the time about “adjustments” he, under the tutelage of HoJo, made to adapt to the stadium.

It’s just another example of the Mets institutionally being a team philosophically on the defensive instead of an aggressive one. Instead of just telling the guy, “You’ve been knocking the cover off the ball your whole career. Keep it up!” they said, “The ballpark is intimidating, so YOU have to change.”

Wright hasn’t been the same since.

  5. Like I said at the start of the season, I expected “streaky.” The problem is exactly what you state: this particular streak was too long and came too early. The Mets simply don’t have the horses to rattle off a 10-1 stretch. Just getting to .500, much less a playoff spot, is going to be a tall order.

Let’s not gloss over the fact that the AAA call-up gave them their 2nd-best start of the season (behind the bargain bin guy currently on the DL, no less).

  6. I admit it hasn’t been fun to watch the Mets during this losing streak, but tell the truth – did you really expect them to make the playoffs this year?

The cold & damp April weather is doing more to keep me from wanting to go to the ballpark this week than the Mets’ record.
