Has negativity actually set in with Mets fans in the real world?

Question…

I keep reading mainstream headlines and even a few blog posts about how the negativity has crept in already.

Has it?

Am I just wearing Howie Rose colored glasses?

I don’t like the record, but I’m not in total “so and so are idiots” mode.

So let me ask you – you’re an actual Mets fan.  Speak for yourself.  Are you negative?

Thoughts?

  1. There has been negativity out there all winter.

It’s the easier storyline for the MSM, so until the Mets force a different one, that’s the one they’ll go with.

  2. Hopelessness and frustration might be better words to describe my feelings. Fortunately, I see the entertainment value in them even if they stink. We’re Mets fans. If winning is all you care about, you’re in trouble.

  3. Meh, last night when Parnell balked I flat out laughed. It’s funny how bad they are. Yeah I am negative but that’s just the Mets fan I have become.

  4. The Mets have forced the negativity storyline. It’s not like people are out there fishing and trying to be negative. Pretty much 99% of what they’ve done off season and in has been negative. They overcharge fans… they make their product inaccessible through dopey packages… they commit (allegedly) fraud and are friends and involved with one of the biggest con artists in history… they do nothing to improve their product on the field… they get off to a lousy start.

So with all that being said, it’s not like they’ve gone out of their way to improve their image. Sure there has been a band aid here or there but that’s about it. Hate to break it to you, but even if this team were winning, people still wouldn’t be showing up because of absurd ticket prices, packages that don’t make sense for the fans and association with a con artist. Until the Wilpons sell this team, they are doomed from a fan perspective.

Jimmy, the Mets appreciate your supporting their multimillion dollar lifestyle. And that’s exactly how they view you.

  5. … Even the Yankees are struggling with attendance and since their prices are relatively in line with the Mets, what’s that say about the Mets.

  6. “Negativity has crept in already”, its been here the whole time, including Spring training.

They hired a manager, nobody wanted! He promised “Good Sound Fundamental Baseball”, no of that has happened. We look like a bunch of clowns.

Lets face it! WE SUCK and we knew we were gonna suck! Going “Dumpster Diving” in the winter, makes for “Stinky baseball in the Spring”

It hurts but we are the worst team in baseball now! Its time to “Take our Medicine”

Get rid of the Dead Wood, Dumpster Divers and soon to be free agents!

Bring up the kids and lets be the Buffalo Bison Mets!

Does it matter if we finish 4th or 5th? Maybe they can paint the floors at Shea 2 or do seat repairs, since nobody will bet there. Maybe a giant flea market or something!

    Lets see what we got!

  7. It’s just frustration. I don’t think anyone is throwing away their hats and jerseys (without the black).

I lived through the early 60’s and the 90’s…I’ll survive these bad teams.

But, I do agree with Scott….we really can’t even think of rebuilding with the current owners.

  8. I was negative with this team after the 1st collapse. After the 2nd I started to really despise some of them. Then I just started to believe we were cursed. But we were cleansed this offseason…Omar, Willie/Jerry, Ollie, Castillo, etc…they were all gone. I was pumped. I was finally positive. I was behind this team 100%, but then they started to play the same way they have for the past 4 years. Dumb and un-fundamental. I’m sorry, I can’t be positive about that. I can’t get behind that. Its not the talent. The talent means you get your doors beat by a better team…this is a lack of focus. After 3 mgrs, I can’t keep blaming the managers…it has to be the players. It has to be the “locker room leadership” or lack thereof. So at this point, I’m past negativity…negativity would mean that I expected it to change…

I’m in full-fledge apathy. I’m eating my tix because this team isn’t worth my money for gas, tolls, and parking, much less concessions. I’ll watch the game, but almost like people must watch NASCAR, to see the wreck; to see the carnage. I sit and just shake my head. It sad that 17 games into a season, this team is less relevant already than basketball, the NFL schedule being release for a season in jeopardy, and even HOCKEY! The weather hasn’t even gotten warm yet.

On a 85-degree Saturday or Sunday, how can I convince my family to go watch this team over going to the park or beach?

  9. I’m trying not to be negative, but it’s getting hard to find a good reason to keep watching the 2011 Mets.

    – They’re not playing good baseball.

    – Aside from Ike Davis, I don’t see any potential young stars on the team that could be part of the future.

  10. I’m really frustated. Living thousands of miles away in a country where maybe 2% of the population give a damn about Baseball of any kind, it’s makes you appreciate the Mets (or your favourite team) even more.
You know what i mean? You don’t take that stuff for granted. I can not go to a Mets game when ever i want to, i can not watch them every day (time difference makes a 7pm game a 1am game for me), i only have access to them through the internet, which gives me the cnance to watch mlb.tv, follow the beat writers on twitter, read blogs like Mets Police and MetsBlog…

I will be back to NYC in September and i’m looking forward to see CitiField from the inside for the first time (saw it from the outside already on the day they tore down the last big piece of Shea). But the way this team has played in the first three weeks is really making me feel sick. I did watch six of the regular season games live via mlb.tv and for the rest, i get up in the morning, turn on my droid phone and check the box score of the Mets game.

All those stupid stupid fielding mistakes, the baserunning blunders, the horrible bullpen and all that stuff, i will take it, but it’s really hard to watch. I already wrote this on twitter a few days ago. If the Mets were a soccer team from Italy,Poland or Germany, their most royal fans would visit their training session, trying to burn their luxurious cars and threaten to beat them up if they don’t stop playing like they did thus far. Maybe it would’nt be the worst thing for some Mets players to be threatend by some NY thugs. I know it sounds ugly but believe me, this helped some soccer teams achieve their goals or at least play a little bit over a period of time.

If the Mets do not end this home stand with more wins than losses, we can stop to care about 2011 and start to discuss fire sales, draft picks and all that stuff. Until then, Ya gotta believe, right?

  11. I’ve become dispirited, which has turned into cynicism, which is morphing into negativity. I keep saying that the season is still young but then I feel I’m being delusional when you see the play on the field.

  12. From my perspective, a lot is wrong about the Mets for me:
    1) No leadership on the field for years…need a Keith type
    2) I miss Shea…new Shea is very sterile and the dimensions are ridiculous
    3) Madoff
    4) 31 different ticket price levels
    5) Hate the black and drop shadows…and the inexplicable Wilponized script where the M in Mets is crooked.
    6) No old-timers day or banner day

All I have to hold me to the Mets is the 1970’s suffering that was satisfied in 1986…that and highlights of 1969, which I am a year or 2 too young to remember, but that was magical.

  13. There used to be something lovable about the Mets, win or lose. With all that has happened, and with tickets prices what they are, it no longer feels that way. There’s too much baggage, too many on and off field scandals and too high of ticket prices to feel the Mets can be lovable losers at this point.

For me, Shea felt like an old friend, a place you went at the drop of a hat to relax, win or lose. Everything about Citi Field is set up to feel like an event. With the Mets playing so poorly, I don’t feel psyched to be at Citi, whereas at Shea, I’d just be happy to be there on a sunny day with my cheap seats. Maybe it’s just nostalgia for my youth, but I think other people might feel it too.

I still love my Mets, and I’m still going to games (I’ll be there Saturday again) but for now, the excitement isn’t there. I hope that changes.

  14. To me, even calling it “negativity” at this point is kinda silly. I prefer the term “evident conclusion.”

The Baseball Fairy isn’t going to show up and suddenly turn this team into something it hasn’t been since Philadelphia first decided to challenge it back in 2007. I hate it, but the truth hurts sometimes.

Much like aaguero9, I approached this season with some optimism. I figured we’d at least get a winning season, maybe stay in the wildcard chase through August if some things broke right. After this start, though, it’s clear that if this team were a car, the insurance company would total it and replace it instead of trying to fix it.

Realistically, we’re looking at 2013 to contend again.

  15. I am not negative, I am more apathetic. I watch, I get annoyed but in the long run I realize it is kind of what I expected and just move on.

What bothers me is the team could have came out huge winners in the aspect of the new stadium. Had they not increased prices like they did, there would have been a lot of good vibes because they are more fan friendly. Similar to Wright playing catch with the fans, he gets it. No it doesnt mean wins but it is atleast something to hang your hat on when the team sucks. Unfortunately the Wilpons do not get their fanbase.

  16. Total unadulterated negativity. They have a single star player doing well – Jose Reyes – and all the talk is of trading him. If they do, Alderson and his all-star braintrust should be ceremonially broiled on a Shake Shack grill.

    1. The reason there’s talk of trading Reyes is precisely *because* he’s the only “star” playing well. The only way a team in last place can fill multiple holes fairly quickly is to trade a single, great player for 2 or 3 other pieces. The alternative is to spend a boatload of money on Reyes alone now then still hope he’s playing this well once you’ve finally assembled a competent supporting cast over a period of years.

Reyes is tearing it up but the team is nonetheless dead last on the planet (no joke; their closest competition are 2 Japanese teams currently at 2-5 as I type this), so what good is it? I’m not saying there don’t exist players who can almost single-handedly carry a team for stretches of time and would be worth holding onto under the Mets’ circumstances, but none of them are leadoff-hitting shortstops.

  17. It’s set in with me; I want to believe they can turn it on, but after a game like tonight, I’m just pissed. Reyes gets on, DP, then David “opposite of clutch” Wright does the usual. I live is his hometown, I’ve always been a big fan, but over the last 2 and a half years, I’m tired.
Right now, a really big piece of me wants the team to trade Reyes and Wright (who is looking more and more like a complementary player who can’t carry a team); I also hope MLB takes over the team, because it’s a trainwreck right now. I don’t things will get better until the Wilpons are gone.
Other than that, get rid of the black, bring back banner and old timers day, move the AAA team back to Norfolk, and I’m good.
