Gothamist story on Coffee the dog outside Citi Field

You know that dog that sits outside Citi Field?

Gothamist weighs in on the debate.

I think we all want the dog to be happy.

I don’t want to overreact though…did the owner save the dog?  Does the dog like hanging outside?  Is this the owner’s sole means of support?  If the dog is taken away from the owner is that a good thing, or does the dog wind up rotting away in a cage or worse?   Maybe the dog eats steak dinner and has a beach house.

For smarter minds than mine to decide..but Gothamist weighs in.

  1. The dog is being electrically shocked into doing this –think he likes it? Using a dog as support? We call this abuse. In pictures and people who have touched the dog have seen it and what he does..There are rescues who can give him a home where he is not shocked into this behavior..this is wrong.

  2. No water, sitting and standing there for hours, with a pipe in your mouth…and you think this dog likes it? What animals have you been around??? My dogs let me put sunglasses and dress them, but quickly take it off once they are tired of it—no shock collar!!!…I have met dogs that are scared to go beyond their yard for a walk because of the shock fence conditioning…so no I doubt this dog is enjoying sitting there and being exploited….

  3. If you think this is normal or natural behavior for a dog you are delusional.
Dogs can’t sweat and need to pant.
This dog is not permitted to pant.
    That is incredibly cruel.

  4. Nobody that shocks an animal to keep them sitting up in the heat with no food or water is going to give it steak… sorry… and plenty of abusers find their targets via “rescue” or craigslist.
