Let’s start talking about Mets on the All Star team

Which Mets players could be on the 2011 All Star team?

Let’s get rid of the easy ones. Wright is 4th in votes and out. Ike is out. Beltran is 9th in votes. It wont be Bay, Pagan or a catcher. Murphy and Turner are pseudo-starters without sexy power numbers.

It’s not Pelfrey, Dickey, Niese or Cap. It’s not a middle reliever.

Jose Reyes is 3rd in voting. He would be hard to leave off.

Could Dillon Gee somehow make it with two or three more wins? Wouldn’t that be something?

Could K-Rod prove to the world that he decided to Man Up And Play Better and find himself in Arizona?

What do you think?

New question. If Sandy trades Jose before the break or Jose catches a cold and can’t go, who would you send from the Mets?  Beltran?

  1. Beltran no doubt deserves to be there. it depends on the team play oddly enough, because when fans are excited they like their players more. Wright could even still make it because of that.

Reyes will be there. He’ll probably ultimately win the vote. Beltran needs to be there.

If Francisco rights himself again he’ll be selected. He was probably the best closer in the game leading up to his slump here.

I doubt Gee makes it, unless he does go like 9-0. That’ll catch some eyes, value of the win statistic aside. But there are too many good pitchers, especially this year, for a rookie on a team that most media people are ignoring (on the field) to make it. Especially for a West Coast manager who has a stacked pitching rotation to choose from on his own team.

  2. I’d like to see Dillon Gee sneak in, but I think Jose Reyes will be the Mets’ lone All-Star representative. A couple of weeks ago, I thought that K-Rod might go too, but the hitters are starting to catch up with him at a bad time.

    1. Interestingly, Mets are in SF before the game. Might sway (drawing a blank on the manager) to see a Met do well and think “well, Gee, this kid’s pretty good. maybe I should take him”

  3. I didnt realize Gregg Jeffries started 1B for the all star team in 1994, as a Cardinal.

The 1998 Mets had one starter on the all star squad, the Yankees had none (although Wells was selected to pitch).

Same in 1999, except the Yanks didn’t even have the pitcher starting

I.e. I put no stock in this stuff. I like interleague games between Yanks-Mets, etc., but interleague play has taken the bite out of the all star game. It’s not a novelty. And it doesn’t make any sense since the season hasn’t even cooked up.

  4. Jose Reyes: Is better than Rollins and having a better year than Tulowitzki. He SHOULD be there.

K-Rod: Would make some sense, but in the end I’m crossing my fingers that he’s not a Met by then.

Beltran: Gritty year doesn’t make up for the notion that he’s a borken man. Plus you could make the case for 3 other OFs.

    Gee: You know what? Sure!

  5. Reyes is a possible mid-summer invite (assuming, that is, that he still wears a Mets uniform by then).

David will be out too long. Frankly, at this point, I’d be happier to hear “Out for one month” rather than these excruciatingly tedious “day-to-day” injury reports that seem to drag on into eternity…

    …but I digress…

I would love to see Gee-whiz make it but I don’t see it happening. Just not enough star power associated with his name (not yet, that is).

Francisco Rodriguez (refuse to call him K-Rod anymore) is slightly possible, but he’s been just awful recently.

So just who do I think is most deserving to go and represent the Orange and Blue? Why it’s Mr. Met, of course. Who else?
