Gil’s # retired, hottest hitters in baseball and more

I thought you’d enjoy some of today’s press notes.  I am tempted to add sarcastic comments about retired #s and Murphy not starting but you guys know my moves.

THIS DATE IN METS HISTORY: Gil Hodges’ #14 is officially retired
during Old Timers Day ceremonies at Shea on June 9, 1973…Jon
Matlack beats the Dodgers as Willie Mays hits his 655th career home
run in a 4-2 victory in that game…Jason Isringhausen hurls his first
major league shutout, a 6-0 win vs. Florida at Shea…Izzy strikes out
a career-high 10 batters on June 9, 1996…Darryl Strawberry slams
his 200th career home run at Pittsburgh on June 9, 1989.

ONE-TWO PUNCH: Daniel Murphy, who went 0-2 last night, is hitting .429 (27-63) since May 20, the highest batting average in the
majors during that span…Jose Reyes, who was 2-4 last night, is
batting .409 (27-66) over that same period, the second-highest mark
in the majors…They are the only two over .400.

REYES OF LIGHT: Jose Reyes has hit in 12 straight games and is
batting .462 (24-52) during this span…The Mets shortstop hit in 13
consecutive games earlier this season from April 2 through April 16
(first game of doubleheader)…His hitting streak is the third-longest
current streak in the majors…Houston’s Hunter Pence (19-game
hitting streak and 15-game hitting streak) is the only other player this
year with two separate hitting streaks longer than 12 or more games.

REYES ROLLING: Jose Reyes collected two hits last night…Reyes
leads the majors with 86 hits, 30 multi-hit games and 11 triples…He
is tied for the major league lead with 20 doubles, is second in the
majors with a .341 batting average and is third in the majors with 20
stolen bases
