Would Howie be even better with a character in the booth?

Osh41 and I were talking about Kevin Burkhardt as a possible radio guy and one thing led to another and the conversation led to Howie Rose.

I’d love to hear Howie paired with a character.  Think Ralph Kiner but 20 years ago Ralph.  Kinda out-there, with some good stories, and a players resume to back it up.

I don’t know if Ed Kranepool is a good speaker..but he could be fun.  Darryl Strawberry also comes to mind.

I don’t care if the person can call a game, Howie can just do all 9, and pull good stories and insight out of the partner.  Keith would be great too but I don’t wanna mess with GKR, and there’s no way Keith is doing 162 games.

Does anyone come to mind?

It has to be the right person…remember Howie on Sportschanel/FSNY was not nearly as awesome as he is now, and I’ll leave it at that.

I’d also love to hear Howie do all 9 by himself once Vin Scully style.

Or can Ralph just do some vacation relief?

  1. I was thinking maybe Ojeda, but he seems to be a bit strong- minded…I actually think he might be a good manager, but doubt he would want to work his way up. He certainly believes in the New York Mets.

As for Howie’s partner…how about John Franco?

  2. There’s got to be a modern Phil Rizzuto out there. He was the perfect foil for Bill White, Frank Messer, etc. Burkhardt may be an excellent idea. I could see him playing off Howie, plus doing play-by-play and the postgame show. But it’s too bad that Howie ala Vin Scully can’t do it solo. He could carry it, but then again Howie has the Icelanders gig which means limited March/April availability … Hey – another way for the Wilpons to save $$ – don’t hire so much on-air talent!

  3. no, not that simpleton Franco, aka The Mouth. Will never forgive him for what crap he pulled on Rick Reed. The answer is simple…do what the Mets used to do….have
    keith alternate TV and radio.
