Who wants a Mr. O’Met hat?

If you’d like a Met hat that I have some issues with (let’s pick another nationality, any one, and make a themed hat – how do you think that would go over?) – but if stereotyping the Irish is your think (hell Notre Dame makes a mint doing it) here’s your chance!

Manufactured by the New Era cap company, this is a very unique professional model fitted cap manufactured specially for the Mets’ St. Patrick’s Day game this year in Port St. Lucie, Florida.  The Mets took the field on March 17th, 2011 wearing just about the most original looking caps they have ever worn (The Mercury Mets cap doesn’t even come close!)…

Unlike the usual Mets cap, this one is a solid kelly green cap with a kelly green bill, and features the face of Mr. Met on the front, transformed into a Leprechaun!  The familiar face of the Mets’ mascot is now seen with a bright orange beard, a kelly green baseball seam, and a traditional green Irish hat containing a shamrock.  In fact, the caps have been dubbed the “Mr. O’Met” caps.

The cap also contains a kelly green button and is a fitted size 7 1/8.  The side of the cap features a white embroidered New Era logo.  Inside the cap are all of the expected tags for a professional model cap — the size tag (7 1/8), the New Era tag and all of the 59 Fifty logo bands.

Tim Byrdak’s #40 is also written inside the cap in black sharpie.  The cap was issued to the Mets relief pitcher for the game.  It shows little to no game use and is being sold as a “team issued cap”.  Apart from a few broken threads, the number written inside, and a very slight curvature on the bill, the cap is like new.

As the Mets Game Used team has not made these caps available to the public for sale, and these caps also have not been for retail sale, this is as rare as it gets.  Whether you would want to buy this to wear or to simply add to your Mets collection, I don’t know that you will be able to find another.  Your chance to be one of very few to own the most unique cap the Mets have ever worn on field!!!

I’m not that wigged out about the cap but seriously…pick any other nationality and make a cap next season.  Let’s see how it plays out.

  1. I’m pretty sure I saw a few non-game worn ones in the Citi Field gift shop the last time I was there, though there might have been some slight difference.

    1. They do? this exact one? no orange bill?

I’d buy it on ebay but if I can get it in the Citi shop I’m all over it..

I get the nationality point, but it’s not really “Irish” so much as “Irish-American” and an American cultural ‘tradition’ as it relates to St. Patricks Day. Also, the Mets German AA catcher Kai Gronauer was wearing it around Port St. Lucie in March, which amused me.

    2. I saw the retail version of these at the Citi shop a couple of weeks ago. They were the correct version; not the ones with the orange bill… but there were only 2 caps left and they were not getting any more in; both in ridiculously small sizes (both were size 6 and change).
I too wanted to buy one to wear, but that never worked out.

  2. I guess you generally don’t wear signed caps, but it seems silly for me to buy a fitted cap that doesn’t fit. it does amuse me that my head is half an inch bigger than Timmy’s though.
