Uni Watch on the Mets BP jerseys being used in a game

Supreme Commander (of Allied Forces in the War to Ditch the Black) Lukas wrote at length yesterday about the BP jerseys.

You’ll definitely want to read the column AND the comments to fully appreciate his head exploding.  There are several nuggets in the article including (as several pointed out) that the TV announcers didn’t even notice that these were the BP’s and thought they were Losless Los Mets jerseys.  Also…

The BP jersey does not have a sleeve patch of the Mets’ skyline logo. So aside from TBTC and TATC games, this was the first game in which the Mets did not wear that patch since 1992 — the last year of the racing stripe era.

Again if you missed it, the Los Mets jerseys return in game use tomorrow night.  No civilian has recieved one as far as I am aware, although Majestic tweeted me and said they shipped.

Goon and I walked around the stores at Citi last night..there are slim-pickings when it comes to jerseys.  It’s as if they are letting the inventory thin out before a reload.

With that in mind, if you want a cream or a dropshadow or a black so you have it 10 years from now, you might want to get one before they become retro.  I don’t know what changes are coming, but they are coming.

  1. Maybe they are running low on jerseys because half this team won’t be around come the start of Spring Training 2012 and they don’t want to get stuck with alot of “Dead Stock!”

  2. I’m suddenly suspicious that they were running the BP kit out there as a litmus test for a hideous black-on-blue monstrosity in 2012-. I guess the “los mets” jerseys looked too simple for their tastes.

  3. If you read all the comments, you saw a post I made speculating that the blue BP was done on the fly by the Mets because the Marlins wanted to wear black in game 2 (they got the grays dirty in game one) and the Mets didn’t realize it and planned to wear black also. It probably is against MLB rules for two teams to wear the same color jersey. The Marlins are on the road and probably have a gray and a black for each player. Since the Marlins did the Mets a favor by moving a start time next week, the Mets did them a favor and took the BPs out of the dryer and wore them. Paul didn’t agree and was not in the mood for further debate. I don’t know where they keep the snow whites when not in use, but maybe with 30 minutes to get dressed for game 2 it was a hassle to get them out. I don’t think this was planned and I bet you never see it again. Why would they plan to wear the blue BPs when they were planning blue Los on Thursday?

    1. There is no such rule. I’ll probably never find a picture to prove it, but I’m pretty sure the Mets and the Marlins/Rockies/and/or/Giants have both worn black in the same game before. I did, however, find this pic of the As and White Sox wearing the same color in the same game, so it can and does happen:

From reading the various accounts, it sounds like it was just Kevin Kierst trying something different and firing another shot in his pro-blue agenda.

I’m surprised there’s been no discussion about them wearing the all-black caps & helmets with the BPs instead of the hybrids. It was totally the right choice aesthetically, but was it perhaps also a sign of the hybrids’ impending doom? Hmmm?

      1. Maybe there is no rule…there should be. It happens so rarely that probably the equipment managers try to avoid it. Do you want an outfielder throwing to a base because he sees a black shirt and its the first base coach? I guess my thought is that this wasn’t planned, that it was a last minute change. I don’t know Kevin Kierst if I fell over him…he’s probably a good guy…a Met equipment manager wouldn’t try to get one over on anyone would he?

      1. That would not be very professional…remember in the early 70s thay played scheduled double-headers all the time…they never wore dirty uniforms the second game.
