Izenberg: Mets blocked Yankees from bringing minor league team to Newark for a season | NJ.com

Newark Yankees would have been interesting.  I bet this is deeper than just Newark, I bet if we search our brains the Yankees may have done something to annoy the Mets at some point.

The Mets declined, saying their organization would only do something like that with mutual and immediate reciprocity as they did with the Yanks when they put a minor league team in Brooklyn and allowed the Yanks to do the same on Staten Island.

But those were permanent moves. This was only for a year, the Yankees argued.

The Mets declined.

  1. Let me sum up for you if you don’t want to read it.

“Waah, I used to watch Yankees prospects in Newark and I no longer can!”

“Hey, Yankees need a temp home for their AAA team. Newark Newark Newark!”

“What do you mean the Mets blocked it? How dare they! I want to watch the Yankees prospects! I don’t care about the Mets!”

  2. Good. If the situation had been reversed, the Yankees would’ve made the same decision.

  3. The Mets were absolutely within their rights to squash the move. I don’t really fault them for it, though it is disappointing.

It would have been fun to see Minor League Baseball in northern NJ.

I’d also like to see the Mets focus on building a team that’s good enough that it could withstand “competition” from Triple-A baseball in Newark.

  4. Doesn’t Newark already have the Newark Bears? I know they moved from the Atlantic League to the Can-Am league, and those are both Independent leagues, but wouldn’t they have a dog in this fight too?
