What to do with my 1986 and 1988 Mets playoff VHS tapes?

Last night I decided to watch Game 6 on ESPN classic even though I own the DVDs and even though I have the original broadcasts on VHS. A whole floodgate of emotions opened up.

More than ever I think this blog is more about 1977-1988 and my youth than it is about Citi Field.

I was thinking back to that Saturday night in 86′ sitting on the love seat, with my dad sprawled out on the big couch. There was no cable back then so the picture wasn’t perfect like it is now. Standard def. 4 by 3. Mono.

Vin Scully. The greatest. Says more with less, a trait ex-jocks and Syracuse Clones could all stand to learn.

When I think back to that night I think of myself as a little kid, but I was 17 by then. Yet, the emotions come back as if I were 12. Strange.

When I think of the 1988 playoffs I think of myself as a grownup. My dad would die a year later and the Scioscia game was the last time he made it out to Shea. There’s probably something poetic in there that Greg Prince could capture but I will just let the emotion dangle.

Back to the tapes. They sit in my closet unused. Last time I popped them in a VCR, probably 5 years ago, they were still in good shape and not deteriorating.

Dave Howard do you guys have a use for them? I now the 1986 playoffs exist on DVD so tat stuff is around, but what about 1988. Is there an SNY special in here? Some use of the video for the museum?

I don’t want anything for them other than for them to avoid aging and then being useless. Better some kids see some video from Game 2 of the 1988 NLCS than the tapes crumble.

Here comes Knight and the Mets win was stuck in my head all day yesterday. One of the newspapers at the time published “Thanks for the Memories.” Yep.

  1. I actually have all of Game 6 on VHS, as well as a few other postseason games from that period. Is there a market for them? They’re getting closer every day to the trash heap.
