Tim McCarver deserving of Ford C. Frick Award – NYPOST.com

Mike Vaccaro is winning the Good Points” award today.

A lot of baseball fans only know the FOX version of McCarver, aren’t familiar with the daily broadcaster, the one who delighted in New York several times a week every spring and summer from 1983 through 1998. McCarver re-energized and re-engaged the great Ralph Kiner (who absolutely merits Frick recognition), and the three innings the two of them would share during Mets games were chapters of one of the most memorable partnerships you’ll ever hear coming out of a TV booth.

We all loved Tim back in the 80’s, and yes he did get a lot out of Kiner. Before Tim, Ralph seemed (to this 10 year old) like some old bumbling guy who got everyone’s name wrong.  Tim would get the uncensored Ralph to show up.  The one with the amazing resume (both baseball and babes.)

At some point, and I think he was sitting next to Joe Buck at time, Tim ran out of new things to say.  Or maybe it’s the way Fox produces things?

On that, I keep laughing at the notion of dumbed-down Fox World Cup Soccer:  Let’s go to Ken Rosenthal who is with the coach of England.

“Joe, the English coach tells me that the goaile, or “keeper” is allowed to use his hands, and as such wears a different colored shirt than the rest of his teammates.  Back to you…”

  1. It goes back farther than Fox.  McCarver was an insufferable pain in my ears when CBS first got the MLB contract away from NBC back in ’90 or ’91.
