Saint Nelson Doubleday’s Mets went to the World Series once in 15 years (1987-2002)

Good morning.  Some fun facts.

My collection of 1988 Mets playoff VHS. I of course still have them.

In absentia, Nelson Doubleday has become some sort of patron saints of good old Mets teams.

Well…

If we start in 1987 and finish in 2002 when Nelson sold his stake to The Wilpons – In 16 seasons the Mets went to one World Series and won none.

In the 15 seasons following the Mets went to one World Series and won none.

From 1987-2002 the Mets had 9 seasons above .500

From 2003-2017 the Mets had 8 seasons above .500

I will be benevolent and pretend that MLB had Wild Cars back in the day (of course this assumes all teams play the same and make all the same roster moves even though they might not have as they attempted to chase a Wild Card)  Anyway – playoffs in 1987 (WC), 1988, 1990 (WC), 99 and 2000.  That’s 5 playoff appearances.

Since then?  2006, 2015 and 2016.   That’s 3.  Of course two of Saint Nelson’s “playoff” appearances I made up.

So CALM DOWN EVERYONE.  I am not here to defend the Wilpons but I am here to call hogwash on revisionist history.  If you lived through the mid 90s or even the mid 00s you would know all of this has happened before and will happen again.
