The Commish is a series of articles in which I try to save baseball.
The other night, MLB played a 5+ hour extra inning game. Don’t do that. Here’s a modified version of a previous idea I call Last Licks.
Should a game be tied after 8.5 innings, we will play the bottom of the 9th and then the game ends. If the score is tied after 9, the visiting team wins.
Now the fun wrinkle….
In the bottom of the 9th, each team can use ANY player, once.
You can use your best pitchers, even one that previously left the game. You can use your best hitters, in any order. You don’t have to worry about saving your emergency catcher, you can burn your entire bench on pinch runners and your best fielders.
All-in for three outs. All-in.
Tell me that’s not more exciting than going to the 12th to see if Gsellman can give us another inning.
