With the news that Joe Girardi is heading to Philadelphia, it looks like the Mets will turn to an inexperienced manager. I think that’s a mistake and I am serious here.
I think the Mets should take a look at former Indians pitching coach Mickey Callaway.
Callaway, 44 years old, last managed in New York City where he won 86 games in a year where the legendary wizard Joe Maddon won 84 and the blueprint for “out of the box rookie” Alex Cora also won 84.
As a manager in New York City, Mickey proved he could keep a motivated clubhouse, integrate rookies into the every day lineup and continue their development at the major league level, juggle playing time, and handle the NYC media unless your name was Tim.
On the negative side, he was unable to coax successful performances from Robinson Cano and Sugar Diaz, so that’s a reason a General Manager might want to stay away from him.
I think the Mets would be able to get Callaway very very inexpensively on a one year deal.
I feel that if this team, coming off the strong second half, would react really well to Callaway.
In his last season in New York, his team played .623 ball after July 1st, third best in the NL behind the Nationals who are heading to the World Series, and the Dodgers who are working on their own Braves-like non-winning dynasty.
I really don’t see the downside of Callaway. I think this team would react well to him.
Jeff…imagine this…but with a different number.
Let’s do this guys.
