Hello to all my new followers. Yesterday was quite the feisty day on twitter as people DID NOT LIKE MY POV that I am not at all attached to Random Guys In Mets Uniforms Playing Games At OddBall Times.
To catch up the new folks, one of my VERY unpopular takes is that the Mets should have traded Pete Alonso after his rookie year. In the history of baseball, only EIGHT players have hit 50 or more home runs twice. Three of those names are McGwire, Sosa and A-Rod and…you know….
With Dom Smith in the organization, I feel the Mets should have traded Pete at his highest ever value and rebuilt the organization. I also don’t think Pete is good at baseball.
I stuck to my guns last year and got told my opinions were stupid and Pete handed in a lousy year. The people in the media who should know better because they saw the games spun it into Pete had an OK season. They forget that three of Pete’s home runs came in the final weekend after the Mets were eliminated from an 8 team playoff which is nearly impossible to do if I spot you Jacob deGrom. Steve should have fired Rojas, which is another topic.
Today is May 31. Pete has six home runs. That’s three per month. Now you can tell me last year didn’t count for some reason, and well Pete was injured or whatever excuse you have for this season but the facts are Pete has six home runs on May 31 and you are making excuses. What you are NOT doing is telling me Pete is having a good season. Again.
The same people who get mad at this opinion are the same people who didn’t want to trade Matt Harvey for Mookie Betts. Always trade high. Always.
Luis Rojas says that the Mets will get a “huge presence” back tonight. Yeah? They seem to be doing fine. They are in first place. Seems fine to me.
Anyway, the “huge presence” is back. I understand that it’s exciting when he hits a home run every 6 days, and he probably will hit 25 more this year and finish with an Ike Davis like 35. Wow. Now imagine what we could have brought back after 2019 with Dom now comfortable at first base and a proper outfielder playing left field.
Pete is tied for 83rd best in home runs. Tied with say Wilson Ramos.
But I know the millennial don’t like old school stats. Things like batting average and even home run totals are stupid, right. Let’s add some numbers together and come up with OPS.
Pete’s OPS?
.769
Seven Sixty Nine? Isn’t OPS supposed to be some kind of big number? .769??
.769 is Kyle Tucker level good. Kyle is an OFer on the Astros. HE has eleven home runs. He plays LF. Pete Alonso for Kyle Tucker straight up, who says no? Then we could play Dom at first!
The Post is already laying groundwork for MORE EXCUSES…
Alonso went on the 10-day IL on May 21 with a right hand sprain that stemmed from getting hit by a pitch on May 5 in St. Louis — at which point he was hitting .287 with five home runs and a .892 OPS. He initially tried to play through it, but since the game in which he was hit, he batted just 5-for-40 (.125) with one home run and a .505 OPS in 12 games before finally landing on the IL.
But here’s the thing Post. It is May 31 and Pete is in the middle of his second straight and year and he has six home runs. At some point the number count guys.
Anyway, I am sure the new followers won’t like this. That’s OK, been doing this since 2008…I’m used to it.
