With the Ortiz/Ramirez revelations coming out, I can’t help but think of steroids this morning.
I find myself thinking of other players on the 2003 Red Sox and how some players with alleged steroid ties such as Clemens or Bonds were already good before they started taking. I think about how many players who allegedly took steroids were awesome for a few years and then broke down.
I think about what numbers the Mets might retire and I encourage them to be careful about one particular number. At least with 16 and 17 we know what their sins were, and they’ve payed their penance. Not everyone has.
I think about the column I’m going to write some day asking Mets fans if deep down they were really shocked that player x was on the list. It’s going to be a sad day for the franchise. That’s just one man’s opinion, and who I think it is I will keep to myself, but to quote Darth Vader, “Search your feelings. You know it to be true.”

Garf, Keith Hernandez love em does not deserve to have his number retired, it is just desperation of Mets fans to have a miniature Yankees feel.
And just say it, you think Piazza took steroids.
If you want to go for a fan favorite who was also an integral part of the '86 team, why not retire number 1? Mookie was there for the worst and the best, and you could make a very strong argument that no Met will ever do justice to the number 1 the way Mookie did. Hell, he deserves it just for all the pitches he fouled off in that last at bat of game 6, not to mention his valiant leap over the wild pitch — and would Buckner have had to look up and lost track of the ball had it been a slower runner at the plate?
There's also always number 24, which Willie Mays had supposedly been promised would be retired. We've already got a Dodgers favorite with his number retired, why not a Giants favorite who happened to play for the Mets?
And while I'm writing, as for an Old Timers' Day roster, aren't the Mets still paying Bobby Bonilla and Mo Vaughn?
