Mets’ Alderson Plans to Wait on Decisions – NYTimes.com

It’s weird to have all this actual Mets News after the off-season cycle, but baseball is back and I am glad there is an adult in the room:

Alderson indicated that the Mets would not hurry to the majors any of their three highly regarded pitching prospects: Matt Harvey, Jeurys Familia or Zack Wheeler. The front office has emphasized the importance of building a farm system and developing players at an appropriate pace.

“I’d be very surprised if we broke from that timetable,” Alderson said.

Why does everyone think the Mets are doomed?

The Mets are doomed to a last-place finish with or without a healthy Santana, so the question is no doubt moot. But his relative recovery – say, 12-13 wins, 150 innings, no trips to the DL – would be a rallying point for Mets fans who are starving for good news.

Doomed to a last place finish?  I say nay.  Let’s actually play 10 games before we cast off this team.  Believe me, I will be the first one quoting the mathematics of the situation if they are 8 back on May 1st, but this notion that they are doormats just doesn’t work for me.

I know it’s fun to hate on the team this winter but the way I see it is they traded Reyes, Turner and Capuano for Davis, Wright and a roll of the dice on Santana.  You never know, it might just work.

Newsday: Fifty years ago, it all began for the Mets

Really fun read here that goes beyond the generic “Mets opened a camp” angle and has cool anecdotes I hadn’t heard before.

About the only time anyone saw Stengel perturbed that spring was when Hook went over his head, asking Ralph Kiner and Lindsey Nelson to broadcast a plea for fans to help find housing for players. The front office was not expecting that and refused to take the calls. Hook threatened to boycott the first regular-season road trip if the club didn’t find a place for him, his wife and their two young children. “Which was a bluff,” Hook said recently from what he calls his grandchildren-friendly farm in Michigan.
