Darling: Mets are ‘a year away’

Ron Darling was up at Yale and..

“They’re a year away,” Darling said. “I know that’s not what a lot of fans want to hear. [New GM] Sandy Alderson is one of the smartest guys in the game, and they’ve begun to turn around. A team should spend half its resources on its minor league system, then you have players ready to come up and help; you have players who can be traded.”

As for me, the snow has given me some unexpected free-time.  How’s everyone enjoying the winter?

Deep down I know Ronnie’s words to be true, however until there’s an 8 in the GB column I’m going to enjoy the road to the postseason.

July 1977: Tom Seaver “not an all star”

Here’s another vintage article from the summer of 1977.

In this one:

  • Dick Young says Seaver is no All-Star
  • A young outfielder named Steve Henderson is praised for his success with the Mets, and the way he immediately joined the team after the trade rather than taking a day or two.
  • Nolan Ryan wasn’t initially selected to the All Star team.   This article is dated July 20th and says Ryan has 13 wins and 234 strike outs.  No type TWO HUNDRED THIRTY FOUR.   Jeez Louise, who DID make the team?

In case you are wondering, the Mets sent John Stearns as their rep.  That’s why old guys like me wax poetic about Stearns and Mazzilli.  They were “All-Star” players in our formative years.

Video: Spiderman attends a Mets game, gets attacked by wall

Hmmmm…Spidey is at a game with a brick wall and bleachers?  Are the Mets playing the Cubs?

Yet it’s the Top of the 6th and the Mets are on defense.

And the Mets are wearing logo-less and pinstripeless jerseys (this is the 1970’s).

Finally, Spidey seems to be wearing an old New York Giants cap (note the intersection of the N and the Y on his blue cap)

I’m glad we have the internet.
