Even more support for Mazzilli as manager

Kids, if you live long enough anything and everything will happen.

I lived long enough to see Sting call the other two guys and reunite The Police (by the way, this blog is Mets “Police” because I wanted to start a blog and I like that band. The whole policing thing came second.)

Now I am living long enough to hear other people discuss the idea of Lee Mazzilli as Mets manager. Amazin’

213 Miles from Shea discusses living in Baltimore when Lee was manager (is that why I found an Orioles jersey in my closet? I don’t recall buying it) and says Lee was just fine. And fiery.

In other Mazz news, Craig Carton mentioned seeing him last night in the NYY Steakhouse.

Steve owns this Mets jacket

Steve: I bought my jacket in 1988 (still fits) at Gerry Cosby’s at Madison Square Garden, one of the few places at that time that sold authentic team apparel. It is the same one they wore in 1986. I bought the 25th Anniversary patch, which I know from pictures is vintage and not a repro, on ebay and had it sewn on at a uniform store a few years ago.

I had to have my name on back of my jacket, but only if I could match the font exactly. I have found pictures of the same font on jackets worn by the 1989 A’s and 1990 Reds (Yes that makes 3 world championship teams to use the font!). The jackets were all made by Starter, so I have concluded that Starter embroidered the names for certain teams that wanted it. The font has not been used in years…to recreate it, I was lucky enough to buy a jacket worn by coach Rich Miller on ebay for $100 (asking price was $495).

I’m pretty good copying artwork, so using MS Paint, with some help from Bill Henderson author of MLB Game Worn Jerseys Guide, I recreated my name and most of the whole font. Then I had to find an embroiderer who could use my art to create a file the embroidery machine could use. I used America’s Stitch Authority (thanks Lisa!), who did a great job and put up with my pickiness.

This font was used on the Mets satin jackets some of your readers may own right into the early 1990s. If someone wants their name in the font to embroider, I may be able to help them.

The result is attached.

Afterlife Shea Stadium returns for Yahoo Football

Good morning Mets fans,

Last winter I had lots of fun posting all the images of Afterlife Shea Stadium…if I recall it was the home of the Saints and the home of the Puppy Bowl.

For 2010 it is the home of Yahoo NFL Football…and you know Yahoo is paying attention to sports when they pick an image of a stadium that hasn’t been used for football in 25 years….oh and its gone.  And it clearly has a baseball diamond in the middle.

I hope this doesn’t cost me a link on Big League Stew.

I guess in death Shea lost the ability to reconfigure for football.  You kids may not know that the field level seats moved!

Ok Yahoo I apologize for the baseball diamond dig.  It’s September so maybe Afterlife Shea is hosting Mets Ghosts and making the Dead Jets play on the road.  I’m sure the stager image will change in October.

While we’re doing all this football talk, check this out…the Giants at Shea!

Thanks to Scott and Rich for sending over the Yahoo thing.

Lee Mazzili sighting

Waswatching (http://waswatching.com/2010/09/20/quick-thoughts-on-big-stein-monument-dedication/) reports Lee Mazzilli was at Fake New Yankee Stadium for the dedication of the ridiculously oversized monument to the guy that kept the Yankees from winning 1982-1994.

Maybe Lee was meeting with Torre to discuss 2011 in Queens. Joe and Wally on the bench, Lee at first? Can we bring back Stearns while at it?

Megdal For GM: Letter to Jeff Wilpon

I guess we’re at the end of the road for Megdal for GM.  Howard won all his primaries, and has send a letter off to Jeff Wilpon including the below.

By the way, I notice we (me, you, the media, the blogs) all speak of “Jeff Wilpon.”  Did Fred sell the team or quit or something.

I ask that, before you make any decisions about who your next General Manager will be, that you take some time and meet with me. I will happily come to the place of your choosing at your convenience. I am certain that, once I detail for you exactly how to turn the New York Mets into the consistent winner you both deserve and have sought during your tenure in ownership, we will find it mutually beneficial to work together.

I pledged my support to Howard in exchange for Lee Mazzilli Poster Day II and I think he said he’d get rid of the black unis (despite the stager image on his site).
