Santana in Game 163

Yesterday was the busy day I expected, so I find it refreshing to write about baseball this morning.

I’m also the self proclaimed King Of I Told You So.

It has been mostly a Twitter discussion (@metspolice) but I stuck to my guns all through June saying that If I found myself in Game 163 I would hand the ball to Santana. There were plenty of nights that Santana Panic was all the rage.

Mike Pelfrey is having a really good year, and I understand Santana doesn’t look like the young Gooden out there, but in a do or die game, he’s my guy.

It was great to see him finish that game last night. Oh, it would be so easy to go 8 and a third, but nope he finished it. Just like he finished game 161 in 2008.

I think and hope that Pelfrey has turned the corner, and I am enjoying every one of future Hall of Famer Jon Niese’s 287 career wins, but back to the wall – one guy is the ace.

The Mets control the Wild Card this morning, and for whatever reason this generation of Braves does not scare me. Supposedly this guy Beltran is pretty good. We may have a fun fall for a change. Let’s hope Santana pitches in three Game Ones instead of a 163.

Some notes from the post-game:

The last Mets pitcher to pitch a shutout and hit a home run? Pete Falcone in 1981.

The “home grown infield” made their 16th start together, a team record, passing 1971’s 15 starts by Kranepool, Boswell, Harrelson and Foli.

You don’t hear too many folks clamoring for the return of Castillo, do you?

27,473 last night. I will give us all a free pass on such a hot day, but it is time to Show Up At Shea’s Replacement.

Where Mets shirts go to die

In a lower shelf in the team store on the main level…..…a Murphy shirt and a Santos shirt live out their days until years from now when some fat guy snaps a picture of someone wearing these and includes it in “You own this t-shirt.”  Sad on all accounts.

Howie Rose: best in baseball?

Is there a better radio play by play guy in baseball right now than Howie Rose?

Whereas some announcers will talk about atomic bombs, Howie will use descriptors like “…to the deepest part of the park, nobody will get this one….” and subtle information-sharers like “…grounds to the shortstop, Jose Reyes.”

Ceetar caught another example of the majesty of Howie…and as part of Honor Among Bloggers you are going to have to click here to find out what it is.

Wine Tasting event for Club Mets folks tomorrow

Thanks to Ceetar who must be part of Club Mets for sending this over.   I’m cheap so I am not in the club.   Please support Honor Among Bloggers and visit Ceetar’s Optimistic Mets fan.

I hate being back at work.

Oh yeah, the wine thing…

Dear Club Mets Member:

Come out to Citi Field this Wednesday night for an exclusive wine tasting event in the Empire Party Suites as the Mets host the Reds at 7:10 p.m.!

  • Enjoy all the amazin’ action from the exclusive Empire Party Suites while tasting great wine
  • Tickets are specially priced at $80 each
  • Ticket Price includes admission into the Empire Party Suites for the entire game along with the 1 ½ Hour Wine Tasting and Open Buffet (6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.).

Again that was offered to Club Mets folks, but yesterday it was included in the general email to all fans, so I suspect you can get in if you want.

I wonder if they will be serving some GTS?

This site is getting weirder and weirder but you gotta at least give me that’s it’s different.
