Most Popular Articles On Mets Police (August 9)

Lest you think that newspaper reporters don’t read blogs (and of course bloggers read newspapers), and in case you think this is all a waste of time and nobody will ever pay attention to us when we whine about obstructed views and black uniforms – keep the faith.

This week I wrote an article stating that the Mets will bring back Bobby Valentine as manager in 2010.  It was the most-read article of the week.   Matt Cerrone at Mets Blog was kind enough to link to the story…and now in the Sunday Post, an article “Pining For Bobby V.”   That’s really cool.  Coincidence, maybe – but I’ll keep on hoping that maybe all our collective typing can change things.  Brian Costello, this Rheingold’s for you.

As I mentioned on twitter (@metspolice) I don’t want to be a thief…the Cat Jinx Theory is not mine (it is Metsmerized‘s) but I’m happy to help popularize it.   Lisa Swan wrote this neat piece about the jinx.

Jeff Wilpon’s professional baseball career is still a bit of a mystery.  More on that later in the week.

The Mets don’t win much when they wear black and Santana’s ERA is over 10 when he does.

I don’t know why the Mets didn’t build the entire upper deck like this.

I still don’t get why Jerry Manuel is bothered that Parnell threw so many fastballs.  Maybe baseball should have a Head Coach who could work with players on a game plan.  Maybe a Director of Pitching who could work with the pitchers and make adjustments mid-game, maybe even mid-inning.   Maybe technology will someday allow the dugout to relay a message to the pitcher using some sort of signaling device.   Jerry, you might want to rethink that quote.

More Obstructed Views – this time from section 504.

You’d think someone would comment on taking a train to Wrigley.  You guys have ridden a subway to a baseball game, right?

I enjoyed Mets Guy In Michigan’s first trip to Citi.

Not sure why, but Yankee Stadium Parking Tips caught some visits this week.  Later in the week I will tell you how to save parking money in Queens.

People enjoyed debating the Wall Street Journal’s theory that baseball should switch to 2 strikes and 3 balls to speed up games.

Folks also enjoyed commenting about ads during radio broadcasts of baseball.

The Geico Yankees Play Of The Game has to be seen to be believed.

Mike Vaccaro gets it when he talks about how sad it is that Yankee Stadium is getting a bad end.

Links: Citi-felled, Topps, and a Happy Days Lunchbox

The Mets need to go 49-3 to win 100 games.

Saw this in Newsday and it confuses me:

The manager hoped that converting Parnell to a starter would force him to develop his secondary pitches, namely the slider and changeup. But he stuck to his mid-90s fastball and that was not enough to overpower the Padres. Of his 68 pitches, he threw 57 fastballs.

Is Parnell calling his own game?  Who asked for 57 fastballs?

Good job out of the 700 Level coming up with a definition of “Citifelled”  I will give you enough to get you inetersted then you go click the link.   Citifelled:   to be undermined by those persons or dugout steps or athletic trainers standing next to you on the mound intended to aid your quest; to be betrayed by a friend or one’s own weakness

I let the 700 level know they should be nice to us or we will have Mike Schmidt Day at Citi and invite him.

I think it’s great that only one company will be making baseball cards in 2010, and the boy in me is glad that the company is Topps.   Great point here (and more details) – baseball cards (like comic books) got ruined when there were way two many to collect.  When we were kids you traded with your friends to get all 700 or so cards.   Then you were done.   Now, I wouldn’t even know where to begin.  Hopefully Topps just puts out one set for 2010.

Here is a GREAT photo gallery from the National Sports Collector’s Convention.   Trust me.  Check out the seats on Page 4.  Pennants on page 5.   I should have taken more care of my Happy Days lunchbox.  Awesome football bobbleheads on page 15.

The “I’m Calling It Shea” guy has branched out.

According to Uni Watch, Santana is 0-3 with an ERA over 10 while wearing black.  I think it’s clear that if anyone is to blame for 2009 it is Charlie Samuels.

Coming Attractions:

Come back tonight for some pictures of awful Mets hats, and some Mets sneakers.   I’ll have some other things between now and then, I just haven’t written them yet.

Monday:   a possible site for the Mets Hall of Fame?
Tuesday:   did the Mets honor the NY baseball Giants and we didn’t notice?  It’s not impressive.
Wednesday:  the Mets Police guide to being cheap about parking.

Two Strikes You’re Out?

An interesting study in the Wall Street Journal:

Some statistical analysis shows that not much would change if baseball switched to two strikes and three balls.   The average game would go from like 150 pitches to 100, the game would go by faster, and all the statistics would stay the same.

Before you roll your eyes, doesn’t your softball team start 1 and 1?   Doesn’t the pitcher bat in your softball league?  Read the story before you dismiss.

Taking The El to Wrigley Field

Regular readers of the Mets Police know I took lots of pictures of my recent trip (do a search for Wrigley Field using the search box on the right side of the page if you want to see them).  I didn’t want to turn this in to the Cubs Police, especially with a long winter between July 4th and April 1st this year – gotta save the generic stuff – but I thought I’d share what it looks like to take the El to Wrigley since I’m sure you guys have taken the 7 to Shea at least once.  Yeah I said Shea.

I find a lot of “Mets nerds” are also “Subway nerds” – like I could totally see Howie Rose knowing lots about the BMT, couldn’t you?

When you get down to street level this is the view.  Between the buildings you’ll see Wrigley, and these are the backs of the “rooftops.”
