Black 1964 New York Mets Uniforms?

The Daily News has a piece today about former Mets Stephen Dillon and Bill Wakefield throwing out the first pitch soon at Citi.

It’s fascinating for two reasons.

First, look at this picture of Dillon.

That um blue sure looks dark.   Bad photo?  The News (which was always known for photos) says it is from Spring Training 1964.  I need to look into this more (any of you fellow super-nerds have insight into why this looks so dark?)

Also, David Howard who has been the devil at times this season says:

Mets Executive Vice President David Howard stressed the value of honoring lesser-known players like Dillon and Wakefield, who both left the game for higher pay at more workaday jobs.

“Our history is important,” Howard said. “These guys, to us, represent a large number of Mets players who don’t get the recognition or notoriety that some of the more obvious players do.”

Wait….David Howard wants the Mets to honor their history?  The Mets want to honor lesser known guys?   Are the Mets Police somehow making progress?

I’m all in favor of this kind of event.  Dillon and Wakefield are before my time – but I’d like to know about them.  When I went to the game last week with Junior he pointed at the Gil Hodges banner and asked who it was.  He got a quick lesson in 1969.  That’s how it works….

Shopping At The New York Mets Team Store (Part 2)

As we continue our tour of the Mets team store…perhaps you’d like a game worn Warthen jersey.   They have lots of them.

Does Mr. Warthen go through a jersey a day?  Did someone decide that they should give him a new jersey every day because there is a fortune to be made?

Come on, you know you want one….

Maybe a #74 is more your style?

They really are selling these.  Go look for yourself.

Perhaps an autographed Daniel Murphy base?

A game used lineup card?

Can I interest you in a Wally Backman jersey?  I believe he was on the ’55 Dodgers.  I have never heard his name mentioned at Citi Field.  Must be a Dodger great.

Nope, I know what to get you.   A Warthen locker room name plate from Shea Stadium.   $20.

Plenty more pics from the team store tomorrow and all week.

Are the New York Mets Stupid or Liars?

This Beltran news is scary. The really scary part is that last week I
heard Omar tell both Kay and Francesca that Beltran would be back soon.

Last week they told me John Maine would take one more start – then
that became indefinitely out.

Jose Reyes was day to day.

There's the Church and Delgado cross country flights.

I wonder if the Mets are stupid, or have they decided that we're
stupid and if they throw some more lies out there maybe we will buy
more tickets.

I don't want them to make a trade. They have nothing to sell and
will just wind up overpaying for someone else's leftovers.

Only 3 out and yet I'm finding myself wondering how I will fill column
space in August. I suspect the Mets feel the same about seats.

It isn't Jerry's fault (despite what Vegas Rich keeps writing on Mets
Police), it isn't Omar's fault. It might be partially the WBCs
fault. Maybe nobody was in the right kind of shape. I hope the
Carlos brothers, Ollie, Jose and Putz enjoyed meaningful games in
March because it is starting to look like we won't even have
meaningful games in August.
