Ebbets Field suites in Texas

Previously I mentioned that some of the suites at The Ballpark at Arlington have some unexpected names like “Ebbets Field” and “Caseys Corner.”   There seemingly had been no outrage from Rangers fans about ignoring Rangers history.  I wrote to Chuck Morgan who is VP of In-Park Entertainment who was kind enough to write back:

Ballpark construction started in the early 1990’s, club president, members of the ownership group, architects just went down the list and picked the top Hall of Famers, added in a few with Texas ties and put the names on the suites….they are not marketed that way, more of way to identify the suites instead of just using numbers or letters.

I thought it was interesting and it got me back to thinking about Citi Field.  The fan frustration comes from not balancing the Robinson Rotunda with anything Mets.   Between the stadium design and the rotunda we all walked into a building feeling like it was someone else’s home.  Compare that to the Bronx – do you hear much whining about the new stadium?  They sure made that feel like Yankee Stadium, and of course winning the World Series never hurts with the fanbase.

Thanks to chuck for getting back to me.

1955 Dodgers to be honored by the….

The 1955 Dodgers are going to be honored by the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Things aren’t so bad that you thought some other team would honor them did you?

Anyway. since the Brooklyn Dodgers tend to come up now and then, I think it’s cool that they are having “55 since ’55”

The blog Vin Scully is My Homeboy has more info, including the controversy related to this patch.  Apparently it was made, was sold, but has now been withdrawn.

On July 23rd the Dodgers host the Mets and it’s 55 since 55 night.  The first 20,000 fans get a poster.  I wonder if Fred will attend the game, and which team he will root for?

Part of me hopes to attend “86 since ’86” since it will mean I have lived a very long life.   How does 2072 sound for a meet-up?  By then Citi Field will be gone and we’ll be complaining about how we hate the Metsdome (or will have they moved to Mercury by then?  Actually it will be the 50th season on Mercury, won’t it?)

While we’re in Dodgers mode, looks like they are remodeling the place. I was there about 15 years ago and I loved it.  I also see something called “Viva Los Dodgers” night, I wonder if they wear Los Dodgers jerseys?

Thanks to @yvaithe for the tweet letting me know about this one.  I’m @metspolice if you’d like to follow, I tend to retweet things of interest a few times a day.

Also at Afterlife Shea Stadium: Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel

Shea Stadium is having a great afterlife!  Not only is it hosting the Puppy Bowl, and not only is it the home to the BCS Champions but Manny found this gem in the February 8th Sports Illustrated.

Shea has been refitted with blue seats on the Field Level, and is now the home of Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.   As I said in the earlier post, there’s an inexpensive stock photo out there somewhere.

If you Spot Shea, send it in – [email protected].  This is a fun fun game!

Puppy Bowl VI being held at Shea Stadium

Shea Stadium lives!

If you head on over to the official Puppy Bowl website you will see that it is being held at our very own Shea Stadium.   Shea has had a great afterlife, recently being home to the BCS Champions, and now the site of this weekend’s Puppy Bowl.

I guess there’s an inexpensive stock photo of Shea out there and we can expect to see more of these.  Harmless fun.  Thanks to Matt for the heads up…I’m shannon@metspolice if you got “stuff.”

Another reason the Mets need a fan ombudsman

I continue to think the Mets don’t think everything through.

Now that the 6 packs are out, one of them includes the Hall of Fame Game.  That seems nice, right?  A Nice Sunday afternoon at the park with some old greats.

However, as I previously discussed, the Hall of Fame game is not part of the Sunday Plus pack. Sure it’s part of the Weekend Plus pack, but if I give the Mets money for 15 games (and let’s all be real, anyone buying that pack wants it for the Sunday games and will just live with the rest) and then they put a cool event on a game I don’t have I get mad.   Now they go and bundle the game with 5 others.  It’s no longer as easy as “shut up and buy one more game.”  You may need to now have, in-effect, a 21 game pack.

That’s the sort of thing that makes people like me throw up their hands and decide to buy no tickets.  Why give the Mets money for 15 games when they could gouge you for 21 just to see the coolest day of the year.  The smart guys are the guys that waited for the Mets to blink and now are buying 6 packs.  The smarter guys are the one’s who will just buy day-of or use Stubhub.

This is the kind of thing I don’t think they think through.  Maybe they do, maybe they run some numbers and figure most Sunday Plus holders are fools and will come back no matter how poorly they are treated.   This is the New York Mets, in Citi Field where the Shakes are great!  Fans would never walk away in droves!  What else can we bundle?  The short-term balance sheet looks great!  We just need to win before they catch on. Maybe that’s the mentality.  Oh yeah. I forgot my own rule: everyone remember, it’s a business.
