1955 Dodgers to be honored by the….

The 1955 Dodgers are going to be honored by the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Things aren’t so bad that you thought some other team would honor them did you?

Anyway. since the Brooklyn Dodgers tend to come up now and then, I think it’s cool that they are having “55 since ’55”

The blog Vin Scully is My Homeboy has more info, including the controversy related to this patch.  Apparently it was made, was sold, but has now been withdrawn.

On July 23rd the Dodgers host the Mets and it’s 55 since 55 night.  The first 20,000 fans get a poster.  I wonder if Fred will attend the game, and which team he will root for?

Part of me hopes to attend “86 since ’86” since it will mean I have lived a very long life.   How does 2072 sound for a meet-up?  By then Citi Field will be gone and we’ll be complaining about how we hate the Metsdome (or will have they moved to Mercury by then?  Actually it will be the 50th season on Mercury, won’t it?)

While we’re in Dodgers mode, looks like they are remodeling the place. I was there about 15 years ago and I loved it.  I also see something called “Viva Los Dodgers” night, I wonder if they wear Los Dodgers jerseys?

Thanks to @yvaithe for the tweet letting me know about this one.  I’m @metspolice if you’d like to follow, I tend to retweet things of interest a few times a day.

  1. They’ll wear their Mercury Mets throwback uniforms at that game.

can’t we honor 69 since 69 first? That’s only 2038. by then I’m sure we’ll be complaining how much of a dump City Field is (Citi Group is now bankrupt, but they kept the phoentics) and why we need a new stadium, despite the 6 championships we won there.

  2. The problem with Citi Field last year as far as the Jackie Robinson Rotunda is concerned was the complete lack of anything Mets in the stadium, not the idea of the Rotunda itself. The lack of anything Mets fits in with the associated problems connected with this new cookie cutter stadium that looks as bland and generic as any of the other new cookie cutter stadiums who are named after the highest bidder.
The Mets are special because we are the child of the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants and we have inherited the memories of when New York City was a National League town. The Rotunda should have had our Dodger history on one side(including the beloved Jackie)and our Giant history on the other; coming together as Met’s history in 1962 with games being played at the Polo Grounds and a team filled with old Giant and Dodger players. This is our legacy. The problem with the Mets today is that they seem content to behave like a small market teams instead of carrying the mantle of the greatest teams in America.
When MLB celebrated the 5oth anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier at Ebbets Field, they did so at Shea, not at Dodger Stadium. This could have never happened in La La Land, only in Brooklyn, only in New York. The same holds true for any celebration of the 1955 Brooklyn Dodger World Championship. It belongs to us, our parent’s and grand parents.( but then again, only in LA could they come up with somethng as stupid as 55 for 55).
I guess if you understand what I’m trying to say you would know the answer to this question: You’re locked in a room with Hitler,Stalin and Walter O’Malley. You are armed with a pistol but only have two bullets. What do you do?

    1. yeah the pushback on the Jackie stuff was that it wasnt balanced by Mets anything. I’m about to write something about the Rangers’ ballpark that will illustrate the point.

  3. alwaysshea, I couldn’t agree more. We are National League baseball in NY. That historic 55 championship does belong to us. What baffles me is LA’s insistence at ignoring their Brooklyn heritage. It makes me sick since that franchise meant SO MUCH to SO MANY. I wish Citi did a better job at honoring national league baseball a lot better than they have at Citi. The history is great, there might not be 27 championships but there are some great stories there that shouldn’t be forgotten.

  4. Oh god how I hate the Dodgers! I’ve lived in Los Angeles since 1967, but lived in New York before that. 1988 just killed me!

  5. “You’re locked in a room with Hitler,Stalin and Walter O’Malley. You are armed with a pistol but only have two bullets. What do you do?”

    Shoot O’Malley twice.

  6. Hey….my Dad was die heart Dodger fan and as a young boy was taught to hate the Dodgers after they left (not the players, who many the Mets embraced). In 62, we became Met fans. It just gets to me to walk through that rotunda. With no disrespect to Jackie, I agree with alwaysshea, the rotunda should celebrate the Giants (that’s where our logo comes from), the Dodgers and their child: the METS.
