Suggestions For A Mets Museum and "Metsing Up" Citi Field

So I was looking at this on Loge 13 and it made me realize that the Mets Museum and Citi Field would be a lot cooler had they not auctioned off the below items.

Stuff that might look nice in the hallways
A Double Sided Gil Hodges Banner.   $2500
1999 Team Celebration Banner $500
1969 Tickertape Parade Banner $2500
Ray Knight 1986 Winning Run Banner $3500
Grand Slam Single Banner $1500
Stengel Arguing Banner $2500

Stuff that was on the press level.  Sounds like cool museum fodder to me
Various “Mounted Yearbook Covers” 1962-2002 (odd) $500 to $2500.
Various “Mounted” photos (Hernandez, Rusty 1973 World Series, Mookie Game 6, Koosman-Seaver-Matlack 1976, Casey Opening Day 1962, etc…).   Hey you can get up to $3500 for those.

A photo of Seaver, Kiner & Koosman?  Let’s sell it.
1986 NL East celebration.   Get some bucks.
Willie Mays?  Oh wait he was a rival to the Dodgers.  Sell it.

Mike Piazza’s famous 2001 home run?  Hey we could get $1500 for that!

I could go on and on…..look at the list   I know this isn’t new information, and I don’t know what sold, what didn’t, or where any of it is, but it looks to me like they had the makings of a good museum and sold it all off.

I’m taking Mets Police Junior to his first Citi Field game tomorrow.  I’ll easily be able to tell him about Jackie Robinson (and that’s a good thing) but how will I explain who Tom Seaver was?   “He was really good?”

No "1969" On Mets Promotions Calendar? (Mets Walkoffs)

The very cool Mets Walkoffs blog sent this over.

With all the giveaweays, there’s nothing 1969 oriented.  Go read their breakdown of the dates.

Let’s see 1969 + 40 equals….the 54th anniversary of the Dodgers winning the World Series!

So right about here I was going to post a sarcastic link to a news story from 1969 and I was going to write something like “did the Mets win something in 1969?”

Then I found this (below)….looks like some things never change!   We were complaining back then!

Championship Flag Stirs Fans, but Some Think It’s Too Small

$3.95 – New York Times – Apr 15, 1970
One of the least foreseen ceremonies of the 20th Century, the raising of a “world champions” flag by the New York Mets, took place at Shea Stadium yesterday

Maybe next year the Mets can hold “40 years of complaining night!”

Mets Citi Field Obstructed View Section 533 Row 1

One thing that occurs to me, is that folks like Steve Somers (who I suspect has not been to the Promenade) think Mets fans are complaining about not being able to see a ball in the corner.   Yeah it’s stupid that I can’t see the left fielder from my seat, but that’s not even what I’m complaining about.

Take a look at the picture.  It’s Promenade 533 Row 1.   How can this person possibly enjoy the game?

That should be a $5 “limited view” seat in 2010, and deeply discounted if this fan decides to renew.

I’ve already decided that since I “lucked out” that my sears are not obstructed I’m not going to play roulette and try to move closer to home in 2010.  Isn’t that nuts.

We welcome your obstructed view photos at [email protected]

Thanks to those who have sent me pics/links/comments etcetera that I haven’t gotten to yet.  I’ll catch up over the weekend.  This site has really taken off and I’m really appreciative of you guys.

Section Six Blog is talking about a petition.   I’ll write more about that over the weekend, but in the meantime check it out.

You Want To Break Up The Mets Core? Then It’s Reyes Who Goes.

The trendy Mets topic of the day is “the Mets core.”

This is where everyone rolls out the theory that Reyes/Wright/Beltran/Delgado are never going to win together.

Concurrently, all of Metsdom agrees that the Mets need pitching.

You have to give to get, right?  You can’t say “we’ll give the Giants Omir Santos and ‘prospects’ for Lincecum” excpet on WFAN at 3 in the morning.

You want something, then you have to give something.

So let’s say we want to make a big move.

I think franchise-wise it’s best if Wright and Reyes have 15 year runs in Flushing.   The team has never had a superstar go end to end.  Even Seaver only played 11 years as a Met.

So that leaves Delgado and Beltran.

Delgado turns 37 this year, and if you trade for him he isn’t signed for 2010.   You can just grab him in the offseason if you want him, and first base isn’t that hard a position to fill.

That leaves Carlos Beltran.

Carlos Beltran, a center fielder, 31 years old, and “only” making $18.5 million through and including 2011.   One problem, a full no trade clause.

So, now we’re only left with horrible options.   If you want to make the blockbuster, it’s Wright or Reyes.  If it’s me, and I had to move one, I keep Wright.

The other choice is to sit on you hands and hope the pitching magically gets better.

Take a look at this list of 2010 free agents …under the assumption that a team is never going to let a stud go unless it’s a walk year.  Is there someone on this list you’d move Jose Reyes for?  Cliff Lee is your best bet.

These seasons can get away from you fast.

Do you want to trade Jose Reyes for Cliff Lee?  If not, it might be a long year.

(Is this a stupid post and stupid idea?  Yeah, it is.  That’s why I walked you through it.  The core ain’t going nowhere.)

Sometimes Complaining About Mets Works

Neil Best of Newsday  reports closed captioning is coming to SNY.   See, sometimes complaining works!

Effective May 1 (when the Mets visit the Phillies), SNY plans to offer closed captioning – for Mets games only.
It is a belated move three-plus seasons after the network launched, and it would have been nice to have all programming captioned.
But it is much better than nothing, and will serve as a bridge to March 16, 2010, when FCC rules will require the network to be all-captioned.

The rest is here
