Today is all about the 1986 Mets

Good morning – I’m focusing on 1986 today for obvious reasons.   Some things will be links to items that you may have seen elsewhere on the ‘net, but my bloggers handbook says not to assume that everyone reads everything.

First up, Kerel Cooper interviewed several bloggers about their favorite Gooden/Strawberry moments…and I’m quoted in the article.  Check it out on On the Black.

We’ll be doing the weekly podcast tonight at 6:30 – happy to have callers!

Quirky Mets logo

Sparks sent this in a few weeks back:

I’m sure you saw this story, but I couldn’t help from focusing on the logo they put on there. I’d never seen this orange-with-a-white-outline-and-black-shadow-on-blue setup before. Is this new, or has it been out there and I just missed it to this point?

While the black is still completely unnecessary (obviously 😉 ), I could live with this as a form of its inclusion on BP attire, printed items, etc.

Sparks, I hate it.   The white outline annoys me, and then there’s black dropshadow on it….it’s too much.  No need.

Cost-cutting guide to seeing the Mets on Sunday

I know, I know you’re thinking, “Shannon is right, like always.   I really should show up for the Hall of Fame Game on Sunday.”

Well, I’m here to help you – and make it as inexpensive a trip as I can.

TRAVEL:

You probably know about the 7-train.  $2.25 per ride, so that’s gonna cost you $4.50

If you choose to drive, I suggest you check out the Mets Police Guide To Being Cheap About Parking – park in Corona like I will.  “Free” except of course gas and tolls.

TICKETS:

Well, since the Mets have ridiculous fees…RIDICULOUS FEES…a $23 ticket (still available at 2:00 on Saturday) will cost you $34.  That’s a little pricey.  You could click on the nice giant Stubhub at on my site where on Saturday you could get in for $28 including fees.   That won’t help my goal of selling the place out, but this article is about helping you come see the game.  (Yes I get a commission if you click that ad and then buy.)

FOOD/DRINK:

Throw a sandwich in a bag.    Guests may bring in one, soft, plastic, factory-sealed water bottle of 20 ounces or less.  Grab a $5 footlong and such a place that sells them and a bottle of water for a buck from

BEER:

You don’t need a beer.  You will live.

MERCHANDISE:

You don’t need any merchandise.  The Mets will give you a cap if you’re one of the first 25,000 folks or so.

COSTS:

Assuming you get a ticket from the Mets ($34, again fees are RIDICULOUS), take the subway ($4.50) and get a footlong ($5) you’re looking at a $44 day.  Not nothing, but it’s a nice time at the ballpark.

Showing up and buying your ticket at the stadium may save some fees.  Maybe you don’t need a sandwich.  Maybe you live in Queens and can drive and just use one $3 gallon of gas.

See you there?

No move the right move

Sure I’d love to have a Cliff Lee on the team.

Yes it’s annoying that the Yankees got a bunch of people we’ve heard of to be spare parts.

But the Mets aren’t close enough to make it worth trading the future and aren’t enough of a disaster to start trading Santana or Reyes or Wright.

So sit tight and hope there’s some .700 ball coming.

I stand by what I said before the season. The mission should be to win the World Series. I won’t be happy with 85 wins but to mortgage the future just ain’t worth it tonight.

No move was the right move.
