Playoffs Outsider: 2 divisions was better

Postseason Outsider doesn’t like the Wild Card.  Never did, never will.  Bobby V should win a division title before he gets crowned a genius (I mean, even Willie Randolph has a division titile.  Even Jerry Manuel has a division title.)

Division Titles are manly.   Mr. Girardi doesn’t want it badly enough and Saint George would be sad (I know, I’ve covered this.)

On this fine morning of Game 162, Playoffs Outsider misses the old days of East and West.    Now I admit that my argument below is shaky since the schedules might have been different, and managers surely would be managing differently if they didn’t have the wild card on which to fall back.   Let’s step into the What If machine and take a peek…

AL EAST

New York 95-64   —

Tampa 95-64  —

AL WEST

Minnesota   94-67   —

Texas  90-71    4

NL EAST

Philadelphia    97-64   —

NL WEST 90’s

San Francisco   91-70   —

San Diego  90-71  1

Cincinnati 90-71  1

NL WEST 70’s/80’s style

San Francisco   91-70   —

San Diego  90-71  1

Cincinnati 90-71  1

Atlanta 90-71 1

Go ahead and rave about this Giants-Padres series, and the whole what if there’s a three way tie angle but my scenario is much more fun.   The whole Yankees/Rays thing is like two teams trying to avoid winning.  Much better they run the risk of a game 163 on Monday (and each getting to “waste” their ace.)

As for the “ALDS” and “NLDS” they always seem lame.  The “real playoffs” to me start in that second round.

Like most things I type I expect very few people to agree.  Discuss!

Playoffs Outsider is written by a fat guy in sweatpants who knows almost nothing about the teams he is writing about this October.

What’s the point with Ollie?

No I’m not saying to release Ollie an hour before game 162 but what was the point in letting him sit on the roster for three months?

Clearly there is NO situation in which they would use him.   Do they have some fantasy that he will somehow be a useful part in 2011?

Ollie was booed on Opening Day in 2010!  Even if he no-hits the spring he will be booed on Opening Day in 2011.

He will be booed mercilessly when he throws ball one.

Even if he takes a no-no into the 7th he will be booed when he gives up a hit.

I can’t think of any reason to make him sit there all season other than to be jerks to get back at him for not going to AAA.   Do they plan on going with a 24 man roster again next season?  That’ll teach him.

What am I missing Mets fans?

I am making my major league debut today in left field.  You may miss it because of the NFL.

Soapbox on being “first”

Good morning Mets fans.   A reading from the book of Lupica:

Here is the opening paragraph of Andy Martinos Mets story in Fridays Daily News, before all the “exclusives” to follow later in the day:”Shortly after the season ends on Sunday, the Mets will likely inform Jerry Manuel and Omar Minaya about plans to employ a new manager and head of baseball operations in 2011 – but the team does not appear close to naming those replacements, according to people familiar with the Mets thinking.”

via Mets must replace Omar Minaya with the right general manager if they want to change teams culture.

All well and good, and Andy does a good job.   However, here is 7 Train to Shea from September 29th which was Wednesday (and then further circulated on Mets Blog Wednesday) and before Martino’s column and all the “exclusives” to follow later in the week.

According to sources, Omar Minaya will be fired next week likely on Monday. Minaya will not be re-assigned within the organization.

Also, Jerry Manuel’s contract will not be renewed for next season, ending his Mets managerial tenure, making this his final week managing the Mets.

Just saying.

I know from personal experience the Times will pay attention to bloggers and give credit when they learn about a story from a blog.  I haven’t noticed one way or another with the News.

Maybe nobody at the News knows about 7 Train (but I damn well bet they peek at MetsBlog), or Andy had the story on Monday but for some reason it didn’t make the paper….

..but as Mike is sticking up for one of his guys, I’m gonna stick up for one of “ours.”

Not all blogs are written by fat guys in sweatpants in their mom’s basement.  (Usually I don’t wear sweatpants, and it’s my own basement.  Today I do have sweatpants but I’m at the kitchen table.)

Good job out of Matt Pignataro.  Throw the man some page views.

..

Getting back to yesterday’s soapbox about how silly this is….sure enough, the sidebar to Lupica’s column has the “who could be the next manager” stuff.   All so so predictable.  As predictable as me publishing oddball jerseys and alternate caps later this week.
