Mike Piazza: will this guy manage the 2024 Mets? No

Maybe we need someone to Make The Mets Great Again.  Someone who can get a bunch of people to rally.   If the team in Washington starts to cause trouble, Mike can be there to stop them, and change the course of history.  Or Atlanta, Miami and Philadelphia of course, them too.

Perhaps, it is time for the Mets to hire Mike Piazza as the next Mets manager!

Mike is a beloved Dodger Met and has vast managerial experience in the World Baseball Classic.  Catchers often make for great managers.   Uncle Steve would look like a hero standing next to a hero like Mike Piazza.  Mets board member Chris Christie would probably approve,  as would some other members of the rich guy club.

That said, the Mets don’t play their home games in Italy, so it is unlikely that Mike would want to manage the Mets.  Unfortunately, Mike will not Make The Mets Great Again in 2024.

Super Rich Guy Wants To Build Casino On Parkland And Media Laps It Up

Steve WHY DON’T YOU BUY LAND ON THE OTHER SIDE OF 126TH STREET AND DEVELOP THAT THEN

You know what else would be nice?  A soccer stadium, but it seems whoever has the rights to the Citi Field parking lot hasn’t yet agreed to let the soccer fans park.

Maybe you could build tiered parking and top it with some playgrounds or cycling areas or a nice pond….why does it have to be a casino?  The only thing Mets fans want to do after a game is go to a casino where the house always wins and you’re the house?  As Gary Cohen might say, “Get outta here!”

“There’s nothing going on. The only thing you can do at Citi Field is get your hubcap changed or maybe get back a catalytic converter,” he said Wednesday during the closing session of Sportico’s Invest in Sports conference. “The way I would describe it is 50 acres of cement.”

..

Cohen also is thinking about changes inside Citi Field.

“We’ve done some investing in ballparks and trying to create a fan experience people are excited about. I have tons of ideas I want to implement,” he said. “You can’t spend an unlimited amount of money, so you’ve got to budget. And also, dealing with the underinvestment that I had to deal with coming in. I call it the money pit.”

Cohen bought the team from the Wilpon and Katz families in a deal valued at $2.4 billion.

“I felt like this was like an unpolished gem and if I could turn this sucker around, it would be really cool,” he said. (via ESPN)

Don Kelly. Will this guy manage the 2024 Mets? No

What Don Kelly might look like if he were the manager and it was a pinless throwbacks night.

MLB.com took a look at some managerial candidates and threw out Don Kelly.  Who?

Kelly has served as the Pirates’ bench coach since 2020 under manager Derek Shelton and was interviewed for the Mets position last time around.

Kelly, who spent eight seasons in the major leagues after making his debut at 27, has seen the game from all angles. After retiring, the Pittsburgh native served as a professional scout for the Tigers in 2017 and 2018 before making the leap to become a first-base coach with the Astros in 2019. (via MLB.com)

Not happening.

“Hey guys, it’s me, Uncle Steve, and I know every hire I make turns out to be a disaster (except Buck, who I fired, and that was me not David Stearns who didn’t even work here yet so how would he know about it) – anyway, we are committed to a new new new new new new new culture of winning, please welcome in Don Kelly!”

That’s not how George Steinbrenner Cohen rolls.  Not sexy enough.   Not happening.

Gary Cohen: Will this guy manage the 2024 Mets? No

In 1995, Buck Showalter managed the Yankees.  In 1996, former broadcaster turned manager Joe Torre won the World Series with the club.

In 2000, Buck Showalter managed the Diamondbacks.  In 2001, former broadcaster turned manager Bob Brenly won the World Series with the club.

It is time for Gary Cohen to do what is right, and bring his vast knowledge of baseball and unique ability to evaluate players to the Mets dugout.

Just think of how if the Mets had had better base running in 2015 instead of playing a Net Negative out there every day, the Mets probably win the World Series that year.  This is the kind of leadership the Mets need.

Will Gary Cohen manage the Mets?  I can’t imagine he will give up that cushy job at SNY where you can mail in home run calls like you are John Sterling.  The Mets will have to continue their extensive search.
