Vote for Kiner!

The Frick award is for “major contributions to baseball” and while I enjoy Gary Cohen I’m not ready to vote for him just yet.

You may also choose to vote for John Sterling or Wayne Hagin (of the Rockies), but I am voting for Ralph Kiner.  This has nothing to do with Ralph being in the Baseball Hall of Fame or the Manly Hall of Fame.

John Sterling, how ’bout that.

Top Three Vote-Getters in September to be among 10 Finalists for Broadcast Honor

August 30, 2011

Frick Award Fan Ballot Voting Begins Sept. 1

COOPERSTOWN, NY – For more than 90 years, the connection between baseball broadcasters and fans has strengthened the appreciation for the National Pastime.

Fans can celebrate that bond by making their voices heard in the annual online vote to determine three finalists for the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum’s 2012 Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in baseball broadcasting.

The process will allow fans to cast votes at the Hall of Fame’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/baseballhall — marking the ninth consecutive year that fans will select three of the 10 names on the ballot for the Frick Award. Voting runs from Sept. 1 through Sept. 30, and fans can cast votes once per day through September for their favorite broadcaster.

This year, the Museum has pared the list of fan-eligible candidates to 75 – two representing every current big league team and 15 at-large selections — based on popularity, longevity and past voting results in the online fan balloting. Eligible candidates must have a minimum of 10 years of continuous major league broadcast service with a ball club, network, or a combination of the two.

Results of the fan voting will be announced on October 5. The final 2012 Frick Award ballot will be comprised of the three fan selections, along with seven other candidates, determined by a Hall of Fame staff research team.

The 2012 Ford C. Frick Award winner will be announced December 6 at baseball’s Winter Meetings.

Eligible broadcast candidates for the fan vote include:

Does The Mets Organization Only Have Five Starting Pitchers?

With the exception of Chris Young, who was quickly replaced by Dillon Gee, the Mets starting pitchers have stayed healthy all season and not missed a start. (In fact, they’re the only ones to not miss time)  Now that Niese will need to miss a start or two, and doubleheaders galore will force the Mets to use some more pitchers, where are they?

Uni Watch on the Mets BP jerseys being used in a game

Supreme Commander (of Allied Forces in the War to Ditch the Black) Lukas wrote at length yesterday about the BP jerseys.

You’ll definitely want to read the column AND the comments to fully appreciate his head exploding.  There are several nuggets in the article including (as several pointed out) that the TV announcers didn’t even notice that these were the BP’s and thought they were Losless Los Mets jerseys.  Also…

The BP jersey does not have a sleeve patch of the Mets’ skyline logo. So aside from TBTC and TATC games, this was the first game in which the Mets did not wear that patch since 1992 — the last year of the racing stripe era.

via Uni Watch.

Again if you missed it, the Los Mets jerseys return in game use tomorrow night.  No civilian has recieved one as far as I am aware, although Majestic tweeted me and said they shipped.

Goon and I walked around the stores at Citi last night..there are slim-pickings when it comes to jerseys.  It’s as if they are letting the inventory thin out before a reload.

With that in mind, if you want a cream or a dropshadow or a black so you have it 10 years from now, you might want to get one before they become retro.  I don’t know what changes are coming, but they are coming.

Mets’ Jason Bay could move to center field in 2012, team up with Daniel Murphy, Lucas Duda in OF

Even I shudder at the thought of a Murphy-Bay-Duda OF.  Maybe Reyes can play “rover” and Wright can play left-side.

Obviously, Murphy cannot play center. Duda is expected to be in right. So if Murphy is an outfielder, he would be back in left, a position he tried and failed to play in 2009. And if Murphy is in left, Bay is either on another team, or in center.

The scout was not enthusiastic about a Murphy-Bay-Duda outfield.

“Oh my God,” he said.

Still, he endorsed the idea of again trying Murphy in left. “We all know Murphy can hit,” the scout said.

Red Sox Banner Day: a guide for the Mets

Ok Dave, let’s do this.

The Boston Red Sox and NESN are asking all fans coming to the Sunday, Sept. 4 matchup against the Texas Rangers to bring signs that demonstrate their passion and support for the hometown team. Fans are encouraged to bring poster-sized signs that express their love for the Sox, Fenway Park or their favorite player. Everyone who participates will have a chance for their sign to be broadcast on NESN, and one lucky fan will be selected to win an incredible prize package.

NESN’s Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy will serve as judges and select the winning sign.  …

Ticket holders to the game on Sunday, September 4 can participate in the contest by bringing a sign from home or by creating a sign at Fenway Park at one of the five sign-making stations around the ballpark. Fans can display their signs for NESN’s cameras during the first six innings of the game. The winner will be selected in the 7th inning, and he or she will come up to the NESN booth for an in-game appearance with Don and Jerry.

Signs must be no bigger than 2 feet by 3 feet and must be capable of being folded (or rolled) and stored at the participating fan’s seat.  Fans can visit NESN.com/signs for the complete contest rules. Continue reading “Red Sox Banner Day: a guide for the Mets”
