Super-overanalyzing the Istanbul Mets fans ad

Last night this commercial starting troubling me, then a major twitter discussion broke out.   Here watch, then keep reading..

Some things bothered me.

It is clearly daylight as they sit to watch the game.  As I write this at 9pm last night it is 4am in Istanbul.  7 hours.

Theory: they are watching the Mets play on the West Coast.

How are they getting this game?  Is it on ESPN America?   (that’s a real channel)

Do they have a slingbox hooked up to a DVR back in the States?

Do they have a PS3 and they watch it on MLB.TV?  Roku?

One way or another this is one technically savvy couple.

Next – who are the Mets playing?  Is this even a Mets game?  That’s not Citi nor Shea (an old DVD?)  The dirt from home to the dugouts doesn’t match either stadium.

Could it be…Dodger Stadium?

Many mysteries.

Then there is this “national” version of the ad where the couple are generic fans

And finally this…is that the same couple? I’m not entirely sure..especially checking the man’s hairline but I may be reaching. (As if this entire post isn’t reaching.)

..and as @howardmegdal pointed out – were we even allowed to order specific seats from Shea? Did we have that level of choice?

So many questions. Very suspicious commercial. I’m starting to think there is no such couple living in Istanbul!

Paul DePodesta does not have a man cave

Last night I was on a blogger’s conference call with Paul DePodesta.  I’m the dopey blogger who doesn’t understand “advanced” stats (gimme Wins, ERA, Avg., HR’s and RBI’s and I will tell you who is good thank you) so I didn’t even want to go there.

So I asked a question about home-life.  Michael Baron of Mets Blog (the guys with the Donuts ads grrrrr) always transcribes the calls (which is awesome because that’s tedious work) and has yet to beat me up for excerpting the part about me so…

Shannon Shark, MetsPolice: Your home life – is there a man cave? A big screen? How do you deal with your family and having to say “I have to watch this game?”

Paul DePodesta: The reality is Im on the road a lot and when I am home, I want to be a good father and husband. I have four kids and I want to be able to spend time with them. I manage to get work done here and there and I definitely take advantage of late night when everyone is asleep. I wish I had a man cave – I don’t. Maybe someday.

I was hoping to hear he had some kick-Aase super deluxe TV hookup.  But I totally get the “being daddy” thing when actually home. Seemed like a cool guy on the call.

Mr. Einhorn: take back my Mets! (Starting with Mazzilli)

Now the Times is in on the action:

City Room was thrilled to receive a news release from the Department of Parks and Recreation on Tuesday afternoon announcing that all 54 outdoor city pools will open to the public on Wednesday. Our excitement, however, turned to something else entirely when we read that “former NY Yankee Lee Mazzilli” would be on hand for opening day at a pool in the Bronx.

Former what?

If you like waxing poetic about Mazz..read the Times article here.
