“All I do is train dogs and people are starting to hate on me — they’re surprised of all the tricks my dog can do,” Fernandez told NBC New York in Spanish, with his daughter interpreting.

The dog is often dressed in a Groucho Marx disguise and sits outside Yankee Stadium or Citi Field on game days. She wears a Wright No. 5 jersey for Mets games, pinstripes for Yankee games and has a plastic container for donations at her feet.

Fernandez says he makes about $75 in tips per game.

Mets to host Celiac Disease Awareness Night

METS TEAM WITH THE NFCA AND R.O.C.K. LONG ISLAND
TO HOST CELIAC DISEASE AWARENESS NIGHT THIS FRIDAY AT CITI FIELD

SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt and The View’s Elisabeth Hasselbeck support Celiac Disease Awareness Night

FLUSHING, N.Y., May 25, 2011 – The New York Mets, the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) and Raising Our Celiac Kids (R.O.C.K.) Long Island have teamed to host Celiac Disease Awareness Night this Friday, May 27 at Citi Field when the Mets take on the Philadelphia Phillies at 7:10 p.m.

Fans will be treated to pre-game activities in the Left Field Landing designed to raise awareness of celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder triggered by the protein gluten found in wheat, barley and rye. Along with a visit by Mr. Met and a menu of gluten-free food and beverages, SNY Field Reporter Kevin Burkhardt, who suffers from celiac disease, will be on hand to host a silent auction of sports memorabilia and special packages, including an opportunity to shadow Burkhardt pre-game at a Mets home game and a chance to watch the Mets take batting practice from the field. Debating ‘Choose the Mets’

Over at Gotham Nation, Mark Healy wrote an article called Choose the Mets. We started having a twitter “fight” (we’re actually quite friendly) and I invited Mark to join me on email to discuss.

SS: Explain “Choose the Mets” to me. At first glance it seems like you’d like fans to boycott the Mets.

You wrote “Every ticket you don’t buy, every game you don’t watch on SNY, every impulse to blame the media for the endless stream of asinine commentary that rolls off the lips of this ownership group, puts this man and his ship of fools closer to having to sell the team. Don’t be part of the problem, be part of the solution.”

But I don’t want to sit home. I want to watch the Mets. Why should I punish myself?

Mark: To me, worth it help the Wilpons leave. Otherwise, it’ll be M Donald all over again.

SS: Well it may be M Donald Grant again anyway. I found myself thinking about Dick Young yesterday.

Isn’t it a drop in the bucket and you’re just spiting yourself? The non frontrunners are always gonna watch.

Mark: If the Mets are going to be a Triple A team, I’d rather it be on someone else’s watch…I like Mike Repole.

SS: Do you think things automatically get better with new ownership?

Mark: Honestly? Yes. I graduated Holy Cross High School with Mike Repole in 1986, he’s now 4 billion dollars richer after selling Vitamin Water to Coca Cola…he refuses to be a minority owner of Mets, b/c he’s not giving Wilpons a dime of his money to pay off their debt.

He is a HUGE Mets fan, and a billionare.

Also, in my yearbook, on graduation day in June of 1986, he wrote “Heals, Let’s Go Mets…see you in the World Series” This guy has to own the Mets…

Know what I’m sayin’?

And I thought that was a good spot to wrap. Check out “choose the Mets” here. Personally, my blog is about supporting the Mets not boycotting. I’m attempting to influence change by discussion of ideas…but I’m going to be at games regardless…whether it’s 1977, 1986, or 2012.

I really like this format – if anyone (blogger/non-blogger) wants to have a friendly discussion like this let me know.
