My 1988 Mets NLCS VHSs

Here are some more items from my VHS collection.   If these interest you guys out in Flushing let me know – this could be some cool SNY programming.  I don’t recall these being shown.

Back in the 80’s we had things called day games…and I had something called school, which means many of these are probably intact broadcasts since I would have had to just set the VCR to roll.

If anyone has an easy way to digitize these let me know.  I guess I could just resurrect the trusty Sony VHS and connect it to my DVD player.

Look at the sloppy labels.  I remember I’d always be scrounging for labels and the smaller no-frills ones are replacements from the originals which peeled off.

More goodies next Tuesday

Picture of Shea Stadium 1964

So much great stuff has been rolling in ([email protected]) and thank you thank you thank you.   Without this stuff Mets Police would just be a guy obsessing over Lee Mazzilli and complaining to Dave Howard.

I worked on the site for like 4 hours yesterday, there’s tons of great content coming up.   Lots of Seaver and Mazzilli, but I decided to start sucking up to Generation Piazza too.

Media Goon has some assignments this week which will bring you some really great stuff involving the 2011 team.

On the right of the main column (on the actual Mets Police site) you will find audio from the Mets’ first game in 1962.  4 hours of it.  Thanks to Michael for that!

Today we begin with a nice note from Eric at Stadium Page.

Hi,

Great series with the old Shea pics.  I’m too young to have ever seen Shea in its original color scheme (my first game was in 1984 and never had a camera until 1998) but I’ve collected some images for my website from that time from readers and some publications.

The (first)  two are from a 1964 Shea Dedication program.  I actually have the whole program (a few pages) in PDF form somewhere.  Let me know if you are interested in that:

These are from a reader, Joseph L.  He wasn’t sure when they were from, but by looking at the scoreboard its clear they’re from August 16, 1969.

It looks like he was sitting in either the press level or the area that was eventually turned in to the Diamond Club seats.

Feel free to use them in your series if you like.

Thanks!  Eric’s note references several pictures.  I’m going to roll them out one at a time because hey it’s a long winter, ya know?  I only have so many John Stearns stories.  The first is the 1964 pic mentioned.

Update on vintage Mets subway signs

Charles says…

The sign on today’s Mets Police never was used anywhere. The sign in this picture is a copy I bought, directly from the manufacturer, of a sign which currently hangs in Times Square station, with Citi Field substituted for Shea. So there.

Notice also the “11” sign. The #7 line is the only line which runs 11 car trains and this is a surplus marker from one of the stations.

That’s a cool sign Charles!  Mrs. Mets Police would never go for that.  I don’t even have my Star Wars posters up.

Mets Sign Willie Harris

This just came in from the Mets.

METS SIGN OUTFIELDER WILLIE HARRIS

FLUSHING, N.Y., January 17, 2011 – The New York Mets today announced that they have signed outfielder Willie Harris, who has hit 30 home runs over the last three seasons, to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league Spring Training.

Harris, 32, hit 10 home runs, six doubles, two triples, with 32 RBI while batting .183 (41-224) in 132 games for the Washington Nationals in 2010. He played all three outfield positions as well as third base last season.

The 5-9, 190-pounder collected 18 doubles, six triples, seven home runs with 27 RBI in 137 games with the Nationals in 2009. Harris’ best season came in 2008 when he established career highs in home runs (13), RBI (43) and games (140) with Washington.

He has a career .239 (516-2157) batting average with 85 doubles, 24 triples, 37 home runs, 101 stolen bases and 187 RBI in 895 games with the Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves and Nationals.

Harris had a pinch-hit single in the eighth inning and scored the only run in Chicago’s 2005 World Series clinching Game Four 1-0 victory over the Houston Astros.

Harris is also one of three natives of Cairo, GA to play in the major leagues, joining his nephew Earnest Riles and Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson.
