Mets Players say Jacob deGrom is NOT using foreign substances on baseballs

s

I don’t think any of us thought JDG is using foreign substances – I don’t ever see him touch his cap, then rub a baseball, then rub his pants leg.  So it’s nice to hear the Mets players say this.

However, I double dog dare the Mets players to say this about certain other members of the rotation.  Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

Pay attention to The Big Zero between pitches today

So one thing to watch today is Marcus Stroman’s routine between pitches.  I find that he often touches his cap, rubs the ball, then wipes the ball on his pants. Seem very fidgety.  I find it entertaining and I encourage everyone to pay attention to it and become as entertained as I am.

Fans may have noticed that Musgrove went to his cap many times last night. Maybe MLB has a batch of caps that don’t fit correctly. Players seem to need to touch them often. That said, deGrom’s cap seemed to fit fine as he didn’t touch his as far as I could tell.

Another stupid 10pm Mets Game notes for June 5

Singles hitter Pete Alonso has hit safely in all four of his starts since returning from the 10-Day IL…Overall, he is batting .333 (6-18) with three runs, a home run, five RBi and a walk in that span…but in for real overall he is hitting .248 with 7 HRs on June 5th.   Alonso is batting .270/.357/.460 with four home runs against right-handed pitchers this year…In addition, Alonso is batting .276/.333/.510 with six home runs in 26 games on the road this year…That compares to a .191/.350/.298 mark in 16 games at Citi Field in 2021.  But mainly he is batting .248 with 7 HRs on June 5th which is terrible.

CH-CH-CHANGES: Major League Baseball has announced the following scoring change to the game on June 2, 2021 in Arizona…In the top of the ninth leadoff batter Francisco Lindor reached second on what was originally scored a single and then advanced to second on a fielding error by Ketel Marte…That has since been changed to a double.

TRANSACTION: RHP Sam McWilliams was claimed off waivers by the San Diego Padres…He was designated for assignment by the Mets on May 31.

METSELLANEOUS: The Mets fell to the Padres, 2-0, last night…New York has lost two straight…The Mets have been in first place for 32 days, since Saturday May 8…This is the longest streak in first place since the end of the 2015 season…The Mets continue their three-city, nine-game, 10-day road trip (2-3) to Arizona (2-1), San Diego (0-2) and Baltimore (two games).

THE SUMMER OF JAKE: Jacob deGrom has a 0.71 ERA through eight starts…Since the earned run became official in 1913, only seven pitchers have had a better ERA in their first eight starts of a season (min. 40.0 IP)…Zack Greinke was the last with a better mark in his first eight starts (0.60 ERA in his 2009 AL Cy Young campaign)… According to ESPN Stats & Info, deGrom is the first qualified pitcher to carry an ERA that low into June since Chris Short (0.64) in 1964…Since ERA became an official stat in 1913, he’s the only MLB pitcher to have a sub-1.00 ERA and a batting average above .450 over any span of eight starts (min. 10 PA)… Courtesy of Stats, Inc.

PUTTING UP ZEROES: deGrom has allowed one or no earned runs in all eight of his starts this season…He has pitched at least 5.0 innings and allowed no more than five baserunners in all eight of his starts this season…That is the longest such streak in the modern era.

MOVIN’ ON UP: With nine more strikeouts, deGrom will pass Sid Fernandez (1,449) and move into fourth on the all-time Mets strikeout list…He currently ranks tied for eighth in club history with 191 starts (Jon Matlack, 199, is seventh)…He cracked the top-10 in innings pitched by a Met on May 9 and is now ninth on that list…He ranks is tied for ninth with Bobby J. Jones with 74 career wins…His career ERA currently sits at 2.53…That is the best mark in Mets history (min. 1,000.0 innings pitched), passing Tom Seaver (2.57 ERA).

HIT THE ROAD, JAKE: Is 8-0 with a 1.90 ERA (23 earned runs/109.0 innings) over his last 18 road starts…His 18 consecutive road starts without taking a loss are the most in Mets history…Dwight Gooden (15-straight, July 10, 1987-May 21, 1988) and Ron Darling (15, July 7, 1985-May 21-1986) previously held the club mark….Miles Mikolas (19 in a row) was the last pitcher with a longer streak, although his run bookended his three seasons in Japan.

Davey Johnson knows analytics have ruined baseball

Last century, the Mets won the World Series.  The second time was in 1986, and the manager was a man named Davey Johnson.  Younger fans may be unfamiliar with the 1986 Mets and their manager, but he was really good at managing the Mets.   TBWeekly caught up with him…..

“That’s the one thing that bothers me about baseball today. The analytics people are hurting the game, especially the pitchers,” he said. “I’ve been a part of analytics but nothing like this. Analytics can be great but with pitching, managers should know who needs rest, who doesn’t. There are a ton of Tommy John injuries because managers aren’t used to that thinking; you can’t pitch guys every day even if it’s only for an inning. I am so upset with that bull.”

As a player, Johnson was under the guidance of the feisty Baltimore manager Earl Weaver for most of his playing career. He learned a lot from Weaver, including how to use pitchers.

“Weaver was a little weasel,” said Johnson. “But he handled the pitching staff the right way. He knew how to use his relievers. He was a genius that way. I took it in.”

Also why did the advertiser decide to show the Mets losing 4-0?

Mets are surveying fans about Saturday game start times

The Mets, who play weekday afternoon games for some reason, are revisiting the idea of playing on Saturday afternoons!  In the past, the Mets previous regime had claimed that their research had shown fans prefer Saturday Night games, but Uncle Steve is in charge now and he will do his own research, thank you.

I believe the Mets would have a more favorable fan experience if they played on Saturday Afternoon, at least sometimes, in the summer.  Furthermore, I think the Mets should look into Friday afternoon games which are just magical at Wrigley – I’d like to see the Mets try one of those every summer.  Just think, you could be at a Mets game RIGHT NOW!

For now, survey says….

Thanks Mike for sending this over!
