Which Mets are on the 2021 All Star Ballot…and who should make the team

Surely the only Met on the 2021 All Star Team should be Jacob deGrom, but hey we can still look at the ballot anyway.

1B – the Mets have nominated Pete Alonso.  That makes sense to me as he leads the team, with 7 home runs on June 4th.  That said, he does not deserve to be on this team.

2B – The Mets seem to believe they have a player named Jeff McNeil who plays there.  Clearly we cannot put him on the team.

3B – MLB lists third base next, I guess the social media people aren’t familiar with how the infield works.  The Mets have nominated J.D. Davis who is batting .390!  But he’s hurt too so we are not sending him to Denver.

SS – You guys have booed Lindor so that’s a non-starter.

C – James McCann.  He splits time on his own team.  Nope.  More seriously, I guess you COULD consider him, but take a look at the stats of the more famous Buster Posey and Yaider Molina, or consider we need to bring some Brewers (Omar Navarez .294 and .825 OPS for you millennials) or Diamondbacks (Carson Kelly .922 OPS for you millennials)

OF – The Mets have nominated Conforto (.230 and hurt, nope), Nimmo (.318 but hurt) and Dom Smith who is a first baseman taking one for the team and having a  lousy season (nope).

So there ya have it.  You guys can stuff ballot boxes and add some Mets, but looks like the only jersey Media Goon will be buying is Jacob deGrom.

(I await all your tweets about which relievers should make it.)

Pete Alonso is totally healthy Mets game notes for June 3

Pete Alonso is not in the starting lineup to “rest” his wrist.

Pete Alonso has hit safely in all three games since returning from the 10-Day IL…He is batting .385 (5-13) with three runs, a home run, five RBi and a walk…Alonso is batting .263/.351/.455 with four home runs against right- handed pitchers this year…In addition, Alonso is batting .280/.340/.527 with six home runs in 24 games on the road this year…That compares to a .191/.350/.298 mark in 16 games at Citi Field in 2021.  But he’s totally healthy and just not playing.

#20 Pete Alonso | INF | .250, 7 HR, 24 RBI, 0 SB

I like this headline:  THE RISE OF TAI WALKER: Since he was traded to the Blue Jays on August 27, 2020, Taijuan Walker has a 1.67 ERA (14 ER/75.1 IP) in 15 starts, which ranks second in the majors among the 77 pitchers who have thrown at least 75.0 innings in that span…He trails only his staffmate Jacob deGrom (1.61 ERA).

Walker has a 1.84 ERA (10 earned runs/49.0 innings) through his first nine starts as a Met…That is the second-lowest ERA in Mets history through nine starts with the team…Only Al Leiter (1.49), had his time with the Mets get off to a better start through nine starts…The lowest ERA through 10 starts with the Mets also belongs to Leiter (1.74)…Walker’s 0.94 WHIP is the second-best through any Mets pitcher’s first nine starts with the club, behind only Pedro Martinez (0.73)… Martinez (.155) is the only pitcher to top Walker’s .163 opposing batting average in his first nine starts with the Mets.

Francisco Lindor is on a five-game hitting streak…He is batting .391 (9-23) in that span with six runs, a double, a triple, a home run and three RBI in that span with a 1.043 OPS…He is batting .264 (14-53) with eight runs, three doubles, a triple, a home run and four RBI over his last 13 games.  You guys booed him in April.

TOTAL DOMINATION: Dominic Smith is batting .474 (9-19) with two runs, two doubles, a home run, four RBI, three walks and a 1.279 OPS over his last six games… He is batting .308/.390/.396 with 10 runs, six extra-base hits, 11 RBI, 11 walks and a .786 in 27 games since the start of May…He is batting .316/.365/.421 against left- handed pitchers this year.  But one time he overslept so we set his career back several years to teach him a lesson.

Matt Harvey pitched on short rest! How did he do? You’ll look

Hey you probably weren’t expecting Harvey Day already!  It was just a few days ago that Matt was sucking pretty badly, but here he is on three days rest because the Orioles are going to lose 110 games and someone has to make this innings go away, so it might as well be Matt.   Let’s take a look at the numbers!

Not too good.  Let’s look at some more numbers!

YIKES!  That’s pretty horrible, but SOMEONE has to pitch…and Matt faces the first batter and OH JESUS ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Then Josh Donaldson walks and there are two on and this is already a disaster.  Two on, none out.  But….SURPRISE Two strikeouts and a ground out and Matt Harvey is out of the inning!

On to the second and Matt retires the first two batters…someone named Ryan Jeffers steps in…let’s check his stats…

OK so here’s Jeffers batting .147 with no home runs and OH NO

Matt strikes out the next guy to end the inning.   And let’s take a long look because you never know if this is the last you will see of Matt Harvey in the major leagues.

Fortunately, it is not and Matt comes back for the third!  What kind of opener is this?  Has Matt reinvented baseball?

In the third?  A nice 1-2-3 inning for Matt and I want to go eat some ice cream cake with the family and I lost the feed anyway so let’s call it a night.

In the end…..3 innings, 1 run on 2 hits, three Ks.  All in all not horrible.   Maybe Matt is a Three Inning Opener.  He does tend to suck second time through the lineup.

Perhaps the Orioles and Matt have reinvented baseball.  Openers suck, but maybe Threepeners are the future!  Especially as 7 inning games are our destiny,

For the Orioles, might as well try this again in a few days.  SOMEONE has to pitch, it might as well be Matt Harvey.

The Mets Game is On YouTube Only Game Notes for May 2

MLB not only plays weekday afternoon games, they air them places nobody wants them to be.

Today’s game will be aired exclusively via YouTube…Fans will be able to access the broadcast for free from any device, including the free YouTube app on smart TVs, simply by tuning into MLB’s YouTube channel, or for YouTube TV members, on a dedicated channel via the app.  Or…hear me out….don’t bother with the game at all and look up the score later.

Today is Harvey Day in some parts of the world.  I know you’re like, but he just pitched terribly on Saturday, why would the Orioles throw him on short rest?  That’s how bad the Orioles are.  SOMEONE has to pitch, and we’re gonna lose 110 games anyway so why not torture Matt Harvey.   That’s a night game and I will of course have the recap for you.

Keith Hernandez, who in the past said he would read the newspaper and then listen to Mike Francesa to prepare for games, says Pete Alonso looks locked in!  So it must be true.

Let’s check the numbers here in June.  Pete Alonso has hit safely in both games since returning from the 10-Day IL…He is 3-8 with two runs, a home run, four RBi and a walk…Alonso is batting .260/.351/.468 with four home runs against right-handed pitchers this year.  That’s all nice spin but LET’S LOOK AT THE NUMBERS HERE IN JUNE

Pete Alonso | INF | .244, 7 HR, 23 RBI, 0 SB

Today, all teams will honor the life and legacy of Lou Gehrig…Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig joins fellow Baseball Legends Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente as the only players whose legacies are celebrated annually with dedicated, league-wide days…Today was specifically chosen as the date for Lou Gehrig Day as it marks when Gehrig became the Yankees starting first baseman, thus cementing the start of his incredible streak of consecutive games played, as well as the day he passed from complications of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease…A special collection of activities has been coordinated by Major League Baseball, its clubs and the Lou Gehrig Day Committee to celebrate the inaugural “Lou Gehrig Day”…These efforts include special moments at major league ballparks and a series of fundraising efforts aimed at supporting charitable organizations, notably the Expanded Access Protocol (EAP) program at the Sean M. Healey and AMG Center for ALS at Massachusetts General Hospital (Healey Center for ALS)…In addition, the Mets will wear a special patch on their sleeve as well as wristbands to help raise awareness for ALS.

I am still convinced the 1936 Mets would have given Gehrig a ten year deal.

Dominic Smith is 6-15 with two runs, two doubles, a home run, four RBI, two walks and a .1.207 OPS over his last five games…He is batting .287/.370/.379 with 10 runs, six extra-base hits, 11 RBI, 10 walks and a .749 in 26 games since the start of May…He is batting .297/.349/.405 against left-handed pitchers this year but he did oversleep that one time years ago.
