Mets to recognize two honorary bat girls.

METS TO RECOGNIZE TWO “HONORARY BAT GIRLS” IN 2021

STEPHANIE SCHMIDT AND JACKIE BARBER WILL BE HONORED SUNDAY, MAY 9 AT CITI FIELD

FLUSHING, N.Y., May 6, 2021 – The New York Mets today announced Stephanie Schmidt and Jackie Barber as the two Honorary Bat Girls who will represent the team in support of MLB’s annual “Honorary Bat Girl” initiative, an effort commemorated each Mother’s Day to highlight extraordinary efforts to support the fight against breast cancer. Schmidt and Barber, each of whom have demonstrated extraordinary strength in her battle against the disease, will be recognized at Citi Field on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 9th.

Stephanie Schmidt is a NICU nurse at Cohen Children’s Medical Center and was diagnosed with breast cancer in September of 2020 at the age of 28 while 11 weeks pregnant. She gave birth to her son Wesley at only 35 weeks in the same NICU where she has spent the last four years working. Stephanie is currently receiving 12 weeks of chemotherapy infusions while raising her two young sons Wesley and Lucas.

Jackie Barber was a nurse at North Shore University Hospital when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She received chemotherapy, radiation and surgery all while taking care of her five-year-old son with autism. After successful treatment, Jackie decided she wanted to support women going through a similar journey and is now a breast cancer nurse navigator, helping patients with treatment recommendations and advocating for their needs.

Stephanie and Jackie will be joined on Sunday by Mets’ catcher James McCann’s wife, Jessica. The McCanns are passionate about giving back to nurses and caretakers like Stephanie and Jackie as their two sons were born prematurely and spent time in the NICU. James and Jessica, along with the Mets, are honored to recognize these two incredibly strong women on Mother’s Day and celebrate their strength and resiliency.

As has been tradition since 2006, players will swing pink bats and sport pink wristbands in commemoration of the “Going To Bat Against Breast Cancer” initiative, which is intended to raise awareness and funds, through donations and auction proceeds, to support efforts to address breast cancer. In recognition of this effort on Mother’s Day, players also will wear specially designed New Era caps highlighted by a pink crown and team color brim, while Club uniforms will feature the MLB breast cancer awareness logo, adorned with the symbolic pink ribbon, on the left chest. A matching pair of pink socks made by Stance is optional for every player.

Mets-Cardinals game notes for Cinco de Mayo

Pete Alonso wondering who could have possibly gotten Chili Davis fired.

RHP Sean Reid-Foley has been recalled as the team’s 27th man and will be active for both games.  There is no corresponding drive to Modell’s as @mediagoon already owns a Reid-Foley jersey.

Prior to last night’s game, RHP Jordan Yamamoto was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse…He will wear #45…and so will @mediagoon after a quick trip to Modell’s.

On Monday evening, the Mets relieved hitting coach Chili Davis and assistant hitting coach Tom Slater of their duties, effective immediately…and Pete Alonso had nothing to do with it.  The club named Hugh “Q-abaum” Quattlebaum the team’s new hitting coach and Kevin Howard the new assistant hitting coach…Both will be in St. Louis tonight…Quattlebaum will wear #56, while Howard will wear #54.   @Mediagoon does not purchase coach jerseys as that would be ridiculous.

Governor Cuomo’s son Andrew, who coincidentally also grew up to be the governor of New York all on his own,  announced today that beginning on May 19, Covid testing requirements will no longer be in place for fans entering Citi Field as well as a new ticket voucher program that will go into effect starting Monday, May 24…Go to Mets.com/SafeAtCiti to view all the latest details…For the Mets upcoming homestand beginning this Friday through Wednesday, May 12 vs. Arizona and Baltimore, the current requirements will remain in place…The new rules and regulations at Citi Field set forth by the Governor will begin on Monday, May 24 when the Mets start a homestand vs. Colorado.

Pete Alonso is on a five-game hitting streak, batting .381 (8-21) with four runs, four doubles, four RBI and a walk in that span…None of that is a home run….He has safely hit in 12 of his last 15 games, batting .321 (18-56) with 10 runs, four doubles, four home runs, 11 RBI, five walks, a .387 OBP and a .994 OPS since April 17…This compares to a .207 (6-29) batting average over his first eight games…Alonso has 74 home runs since he entered the league in 2019….That is the highest total in the majors in that span…Alonso already ranks 27th on the Mets all-time list…He trails Rusty Staub who is 26th with 75.  Pete has no idea how or why Chili Davis was fired and had nothing to do with it.

The Big Zero stats game one, weather permitting.

Miguel Castro starts game two for some reason.

Vulgar Pete Alonso gets into the Burger Business at Citi Field

The T-Shirt Guy Blog says…

I had the pleasure of being invited to the ballpark yesterday for a tasting of the Polar Burger from the new Alonso’s Arctic Grill at Citi Field.

I unfortunately wasn’t able to make it, but still took part in the zoom call with other invitees.

Similar to Keith Hernandez’s Grill back in the day (the Mex Burger came with a Tootsie Roll Pop), Pete is now the proud father of his own ballpark burger.

Pete made a point to say how much he cares about sustainability, and carefully worked with the Citi Field Chef’s on building his burger with all local ingredients.

The Alonso Arctic Grill will open this Friday night, May 7th, and is located behind section 102 in right field, just steps from the Shea Bridge.

Of course “If Matt Harvey did this…”

Anyway if you’d like to know the menu offerings, check out The T-Shirt Blog and remember Vulgar Pete has no idea why Chili Davis was fired.  I guess the hamburger stand doesn’t offer Chili Burgers as an option.   #LGM

Thanks to @nycsporty for putting this on my radar.  I used to have @mediagoon for this stuff but he’s always at Modell’s buying jerseys.

How GKR+Gelbs and the Mets Beat all blew the Jacob deGrom story

Here at Mets Police I don’t second guess, I first guess.

As you saw, Jacob deGrom had a scratched start.  The signs were there.  I have proof, and lots of it.

March 7th, MetsPolice.com article citing the New York Times’ coverage of Syndergaard’s injury as a warning.  I even went to the BIG RED FONT for this one.

Buy hey, there was #TheNarrative and The Narrative declared that JDG was throwing hard ooooooooo.

March 12th, another article on MetsPolice.com after the media fawned again over how hard JDG was throwing in March.

April 20 tweet while I am watching the Mets game

Now Gary, I get that a lot of the beat are younger than us, but you have called 30+ years of Mets games.  Can you recall an instance of a starting pitcher asking for an extra day’s rest?  One?  Can you name one?  Usually they want the ball and want to go on shot rest.  But y’all just glossed over this.  But that’s ok.

April 20 another tweet

Here’s a piece from April 21 asking WHY does JDG want an extra day between starts.

April 22 tweet

April 23rd tweet

I can almost understand you all ignoring everything above this line because JDG has been pitching so well, but when he asked for more time for a second time everyone’s spidey sense should have been tingling, no?

4 days ago tweet.

Gary and the Beat, you didn’t think it was odd that JDG was asking for a day’s rest AGAIN?   Not the least bit odd.  Nope, let’s talk about Pete Alonso’s fake coach and just print whatever the Mets feed us.

Where was Gelbs on this?  Every game gets interrupted with “I talked to so and so” reports from Gelbs.  You didn’t think anything was wrong with Jake?

Ronnie, you know a lot more about pitching that I do.  Isn’t it odd that a pitcher would ask for extra time?

Whichever Tim it was that got into it with me on twitter about Alonso’s defense?  Where was your deGrom story?

The Truth WAS out there Scully.  It’s in this article about Lat injuries.  You know what causes Lat injuries?  Throwing too hard.

Were those tears of guilt for Mets’ Vulgar Pete Alonso?

Oh please Pete…

“I’m gonna be completely honest,” Alonso told reporters via Zoom. “So I found out on Twitter while I was eating my postgame meal and I talked to Zack (Scott), our GM. It was a professional talk. Then I gave (Slater) and (Davis) two big old hugs and I cried at my locker for a little bit.” (via Yahoo Sports)

The Post reminds us…

Over the weekend Mets players, most notably Pete Alonso, referred to Donnie Stevenson, a fictional coach who had helped get the team fired up offensively. Davis chuckled at the mention of Donnie Stevenson and admitted the fictional character probably didn’t help his cause.

“The players were having fun and I know they didn’t mean any harm,” Davis said. “It was a fun time for them, but it probably didn’t help.

Let’s also talk about the media here.

Pete floated the Donnie thing in the press conference.  Now I am not a reporter, but I imagine both the reporter and the league want the players to answer questions and take it seriously.  If a star player like Vulgar Pete is going to get up there and be dishonest with the media then that helps nobody.

But the 2021 Beat, the worst version of the beat yet (the ones who didn’t notice the deGrom story but that’s my next post) just went with the Donnie story as cute.   And it went national.  Yep, there was a fictional character who could help the Mets more that Chili Davis.

Well Pete, I see you are shocked to find out there is gambling going on here.

In 2020 the reason Pete wasn’t hitting home runs was because Chili wasn’t around because of Covid.  In 2021, what’s the excuse going to be – that they fired Chili?  Whose fault is that?
