Mets go all Steinbrenner and fire hitting coach Chili Davis

Does Steve Steinbrenner now realize he blew the off-season?  The first move is usually the hitting coach…then the next move is the Field Manager, which Steve should have changed this winter.

Steve Steinbrenner’s third place Mets are 11-12, and the comedians have yet to come out to support the team.

I am also enjoying Acting Regional General Manager Z. Michael Scott acting like he’s in charge of anything.

Scott said, “This was a really difficult decision to make, but the reason we felt like it was the right decision was based on a vision for what we want our major league hitting program to be.  There are certain things, the process under the hood is what’s important. It’s not about results.”

“Our job is to support the players and put them in a position to succeed as a baseball operations group and we just felt the players needed a different level of support and maybe some different skills brought into the mix,”

Plus Sandy called and said he was going to sleep but for me to take the move and deal with all this stuff, that’s why he has me.  He’s too old to deal with reporters.

METS RELIEVE CHILI DAVIS AND TOM SLATER OF THEIR DUTIES

HUGH QUATTLEBAUM & KEVIN HOWARD TO JOIN COACHING STAFF

FLUSHING, N.Y., May 3, 2021 – The New York Mets have announced tonight that the club has relieved hitting coach Chili Davis and assistant hitting coach Tom Slater of their duties, effective immediately. The club has named Hugh Quattlebaum the team’s new hitting coach and Kevin Howard the new assistant hitting coach. Both will be in St. Louis on Tuesday.

Quattlebaum, 42, joined the Mets organization this offseason as the minor league director of hitting development. He had spent the previous three seasons with Seattle. Quattlebaum was the Mariners’ minor league hitting coordinator in 2018-2019 and was the assistant hitting coach with the Major League team during 2020. Prior to working with the Mariners, he was coaching and consulting in Southern California. Quattlebaum was drafted by Detroit in the 25th round of the 2000 First-Year Player Draft from Amherst College (MA). He spent four years in the Tigers (2000-2002) and Orioles (2003) minor league systems.

Howard, 39, joined the Mets this year as the organization’s director of player development. He spent the previous six seasons in Cleveland’s organization, including 2019-2020 as the minor league hitting coordinator. Howard played professionally for 12 seasons, playing in the Reds, Yankees, Phillies, Dodgers, Mariners, Padres, Blue Jays and Cardinals organizations before spending the final two years of his playing career in Independent ball. He was originally drafted in the fifth round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft by Cincinnati. Howard earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Miami, where played collegiately for three seasons, winning a National Championship in 2001.

Davis was in his third season as the Mets hitting coach and Slater was in his fourth season as the team’s assistant hitting coach.

Mets Cardinals Game Notes for May 3, 2021

Did you know Keith Hernandez once played for the Cardinals?  It may even come up on the telecast!

Baseball needs to market this Keith Hernandez guy.  He is hitting .344 and nobody has heard of him.

LHP Joey Lucchesi has been recalled from the team’s Alternate Training Site and will start tonight’s game.  @mediagoon is NOT on his way to Modell’s as he already owns a Lucchesi jersey from earlier in the season.

LHP Daniel Zamora was optioned to the team’s Alternate Training Site following yesterday’s game.

Lucchesi will make his third start (fourth game) and is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA (six earned runs/8.0 innings) with two walks and 11 strikeouts even though the Mets Beat said he had a good spring because they have zero concept of how Spring Training works or what Spring Training lineups look like.

Congratulations to The One True Ace……Jacob deGrom who was named the National League Pitcher of the Month for April…The two-time Cy Young Award winner made five starts last month and went 2-2 with a 0.51 ERA (two earned runs/35.0 innings) with four walks and 59 strikeouts…He tied Nolan Ryan (1978) for the most strikeouts through a pitcher’s first five appearances of a season (since 1893)…His 0.51 ERA after five starts is the lowest ERA in team history…David Cone held the previous record for lowest ERA through five starts (0.72 ERA in 1988)…DeGrom finished the month with 59 strikeouts and 0.51 ERA…It is the 279th instance since earned runs became official of a pitcher having at least 55 strikeouts in a month and deGrom’s ERA was the lowest of any of them…Courtesy of ESPN Stats & Info…Matt Harvey was the last Met to win the award, doing so in April of 2013

Jacob is totally healthy despite asking for an extra day of rest two starts in a row now.  Nothing to be suspicious of really.

Dominic Smith is on a three-game hitting streak…He is batting .385 (5-13) with a run, two doubles and an RBI…Since the start of 2019, Smith has played 160 games and owns a .288/.347/.534 slash line with 66 runs, 35 doubles, a triple, 23 home runs, 75 RBI, 35 walks and an .880 OPS but was not allowed to play on Opening Day for some reason.

Matt Harvey faced the A’s! How did he do? You’ll look!

Happy Harvey Day everyone.  Once upon a time Matt Harvey was in the A’s organization.  They sent him to the minors and did not love him enough to let them join their Major League Team, so this was an opportunity for Matt to show them what they are missing out on.

Bo and Luke Duke have the call on MASN and they are quite excited, suggesting that Matt is pitching like The Dark Knight of old, proving they have no idea what they are talking about.  Let’s check the numbers.

It’s a nice colorful matchup today and Canha leads off with an infield single.

Would one on and nobody out bother The Dark Knight?  Someone named Jed Lowrie plays baseball (sometimes) and hits one of those fly balls that is kinda deep but doesn’t show up in the boxscore.

Matt is not impressed by Mr. Lowrie’s attempt.

Canha steals second, the next guy walks, and Matt throws a nice DP ball (Matt loves a nice DP) but the Orioles suck at fielding.

So it’s second and third and two out but man these uniforms looks snazzy, don’t they?

A comeback nails Matt in the “leg” but he makes the play.  Matt looks kind of pensive.

The Orioles offense went down faster than a supermodel in the All Star Game starting pitcher’s Maserati (sorry, thats was Vulgar. Maybe I will hit 53 HRs…but you laughed)  and I have barely have time to post the first inning before Matt is back out there.

Bo and Luke are concerned that Matt’s “leg” may be injured.    The first Athletic flies out to the track but that doesn’t show up in teh box score.  Second guy also flies out to left.  And the third guy who probably has a name but this is baseball so who cares grounds out.  A 1-2-3 for Matt and he has the “hey fat blogger, what ya got to say now?” face

This post is going much better than the last matt Harvey recap because the rabbit ears are working well, and Mrs. Mets Police isn’t telling me about her day, so it’s on to the third!  Let’s check the score…

Six Nothing!  Wow.  Matt did walk this guy on 4 pitches but nothing came out it, and we’re on to the 4th.  Bo and Luke think Matt isn’t getting calls.

A 1-2-3-4 4th for The Real Deal (another pesky walk) but things are looking pretty good for Matt in his 150th career start.

The 5th? A 1-2-3-4 with a single mixed in, and Matt strikes out Major League Baseball Player Jed Lowrie to end the inning…Matt’s 1st strikeout of the day.

I’m bored out of my mind as we go to the 6th.   With two outs, a single and a double.

And now a man in a mask is visiting..

And that’s it for The Dark Knight.

It’s all for the best as the Mets are on and this baseball game was horribly boring.  Nice to see the Orioles have listened to me about Matt being OK until he isn’t…..tonight they got him out of there.

The box score will look better than the reality.  He was a tad wild, but hey 5+ and a run (or two if the Orioles let that guy on 2nd score)….not bad at all.

I’ll update with the final score but right now I have Mets to watch.

UPDATE:Orioles won 8-4. Matt got the win!

Mets-Phillies game notes for May 1

The Mets could say May Day on Rojas and Chili but they won’t.

Tell JDG to stop whining.

On this day in 1974, Tom Seaver tossed 12.0 innings and allowed only a run on three hits with two walks and 16 strikeouts, but the Mets fell to the Dodgers, 2-1.

The Mets went 1-14 with runners in scoring position last night…The team is batting .176 (27-153) with a .287 OBP with RISP this season… The team’s .176 average with RISP is 30th in the majors…The Mets are batting .235/.307/.346 with no one on base…The team’s .235 mark is eighth in the majors and fourth in the NL.

The Mets are in stretch where 15 of their next 20 games will be on the road…New York is 3-7 away from Citi Field in 2021.. The team owns a 4.15 ERA (37 earned runs/80.1 innings) with 33 walks and 100 strikeouts on the road, compared to a 6-4 record with a 1.75 ERA (17 earned runs/87.0 innings) with 21 walks and 107 strikeouts at home.

Pete Alonso | INF | .250, 5 HR, 12 RBI, 0 SB

Francisco Lindor | INF | .189, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 0 SB.  YIKES.

Dominic Smith | INF/OF | .206, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 0 SB. TERRIBLE
