The One True Ace, Jacob deGrom

aces
2018 and deGrom still not center in Mets photos

Well, all anyone is talking about is Jacob deGrom as they should.  He, not Matt Harvey, not Noah Syndergaard, not whoever else they threw in the mix – Jacob deGrom is the One True Ace.

Long time readers know I have been sing the phrase One True Ace for years and years, even when he wasn’t the one everyone had their eyes on.

He’s been amazing again this year, pretty pretty good last year, and of course two CYAs before that.

Meanwhile, he’s what old guys like me want in a player.  Does his thing, does it well, and you never hear from him.  I am not worried that deGrom went out for burritos last night and will need to be woken up by security.  He isn’t going to try to change Let’s Go Mets or have the Mets wear stupid colors.  He just goes about his thing.

And as much as I give everyone major grief for throwing the Seaver word around…and still tap the brakes on that…I do have to tip my blue cap to him for having a lower ERA than Seaver’s Mets years given the eras in which they pitched.   That is mighty impressive.

He will have a weirdly low win total when all is said and done, but today’s baseball isn’t 1972’s baseball, is it?

Oh and that time of game last night?  What was it – like two twenty something?  Fantastic. This is what baseball needs…its STARS in the game (a complete game? in 2020???) and the game moving along.

I’m still concerned, as is my nature, about that extra day off.  Obviously he was A+ last night, but that day off is still weird to me.  That and all these 100mph pitches, including throwing that in Spring.  Weird.

Annnnd…….and this is not at all me saying this…….but did you catch Gary throwing some shade?  Gary called the increase in speed – I think the word he used was – unexplainable.  It almost sounded like….nah…..I hope not….that would be awful!

Now tell me Captain Picard, how many Aces do you see?

Now tell me Picard. How many aces do you see?

Mets wear hideous black warm up shirts

Me, one week after the Mets win the World Series while wearing home pinstripes (with no drop shadow of course) or the traditional road grays (with no drop shadow)

For those of you who have been hoping to get rid of me, remember the mission statement of Mets Police is that I stay until they WIN THE WORLD SERIES WHILE NICELY DRESSED and then I cover the parade and then I am gone.

I fear I will be doing this for a long time because the idiots in charge do things like this when not voluntarily giving the feds $1,800,000,000 because they are cool like that.

Mets Game Notes: deGrom bats 8th, Mets wear 42

Jacob deGrom, who is perfectly fine and just asked for an extra days rest even though I’ve never heard of a pitcher ever doing that, will bat EIGHT tonight as we see the first signs of Luis Rojas panicking.

LHP Joey Lucchesi who was the 5th starter and you were all OK with that has been optioned to the team’s Alternate Training Site.  Wow.

LHP Stephen Tarpley has been recalled from the Alternate Training Site.   @mediagoon now shops at Dick’s Sporting Goods and has acquired his jersey.

Tonight, the Mets will celebrate Jackie Robinson Day at Citi Field…The team was originally schedule to celebrate Robinson’s legacy on April 15 against the Phillies, but the game was postponed due to rain…Luis Rojas, coaches and player will #42 today to commemorate the anniversary of Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson breaking baseball’s color barrier in 1947…MLB retired Robinson’s number throughout the Majors in 1997 in ceremony at Shea Stadium and every player and all on-field personnel has worn his Number 42 during games scheduled on Jackie Robinson Day since 2009…In addition to the Jerseys, the Mets Scoreboard will feature various videos honoring Robinson and his legacy during the game.

Tonight, the Mets will hold a moment of silence to remember Tom Robson and Marty Resnick…Robson served several roles in the organization including hitting coach and a bench coach from 1999- 00 and 2002…He passed away at the age of 75…Resnick began working at Shea Stadium as an usher in 1975…For forty-six years, he was a beloved member of the Mets family, guiding fans to their seats at both Shea and Citi Field through the beginning of the 2021 season…He passed away last week at the age of 85.

Pete Alonso is back baby and has homered in back-to-back games for the first time this season…He clubbed his fourth home run of the year and his 73rd of his career last night…His 73 home runs since he entered the league in 2019 is the most in the majors…Alonso already ranks 27th on the Mets All-Time list…He has homered in three straight games thrice before in his career.  Whatever you do don’t bring up his OBP which is under .300, and so is Dom Smith’s!!! Obviously JD Davis should be the every day first baseman!

Pete wore blue sleeves last night in compliance with MLB rules.

Blue Sleeved Pete Alonso gets vulgar with media!

Vulgar Pete Alonso who enjoys the swear words told the media that “Getting swept feels like eating a (S word) sandwich, to be honest with you.”   I’ve never had such a sandwich but I will take his word for it.

Vulgar Pete did hit a home run though, his fourth of the season.  He is now batting .231 and has an OPS of .793 for millennials who like big numbers.  ‘

And can we talk about Pete’s .293 OBP or no?

Also the media has discovered Exit Velocity and everything is now about Exit Velocity.  Exit Velocity is like Defensive Runs Saved but minus Lagares and plus Alonso.  Remember Defensive Runs Saved? Nobody talks about Defensive Runs Saved any more.

Pete has struck out 17 times in 58 Plate Appearances for a POLAR of .293

I am here to introduce a new stats call SUX.   SUX is calculated by subtracting POLAR from OBP.   So if we take Pete’s OBP of .293 and subtract his POLAR which is also .293 you get a SUX of .000

As a comparison, in 2016 Daniel Murphy of the Nationals had a POLAR of .097 (57/582) and a SUX of .497.  But he probably didn’t run the bases well and was a Net Negative.

Dom Smith currently has a NEGATIVE SUX….his OBP is only .275 and his POLAR is .291.

You guys can make fun of SUX but I think I just invented a great metric!

Here we see Pete hitting a home run.  Note his sleeves.  They are legal blue (the team’s primary color).  Did someone at @mlb let him know he was in violation on Wednesday?  Does Pete just like to mix it up?  Hmmmm.
