Mets-Cubs game notes for April 22, 2021

RHP Trevor Hildenberger was optioned to the Alternate Training Site following yesterday’s game.

RHP Sean Reid-Foley has been recalled from the Alternate Training Site.  He will wear #61 and @mediagoon has already purchased his jersey.

Pete Alonso clubbed his third home run of the season yesterday…Pete is back baby and is on pace to hot like 24 home runs this season!  His two-run shot had an exit velocity of 115.4 MPH…That is the fifth highest exit velocity for a home run in his career…Since 2015, when Statcast data began, his five home runs with an exit velocity of at least 115 MPH is tied for the fourth-most in the majors…No other player has more than two home runs with EV over 115 MPH since Alonso entered the league in 2019.  That said, exit velocity is new nonsense just like defensive runs saved was a few years back, and nobody mentions that now that Juan Lagares is gone.  But whatever get all excited about exit velocity because, as we know, millennials need big numbers to enjoy baseball.

Dominic Smith is batting .292/.355/.552 with 64 runs, 32 doubles, a triple, 23 homers, 73 RBI, 35 walks and a .907 OPS in 151 games since the start of the 2019 season…This includes a .297/.377/.505 slash line against fellow southpaws and a .291/.348/.565 mark against right-handers.  But he wasn’t allowed to start Opening Day in 2020 or 2021.

Jacob deGrom will not pitch tonight for reasons that seem very suspicious but nobody asks any questions around here.

Sterling or Scully: Gary Cohen calls a rare Pete Alonso HR

We haven’t been able to play Sterling or Scully much this season because the Mets rarely play and when they do they rarely hit home runs, and when they do hit home runs, it is rarely Pete Alonso.

Tonight Pete hit his count ’em, not first, not second, but THIRD home run of the season and Gary Cohen had the call…

Look at that Gary, you can still do it when you want to! No Track, no wall. You did force your Outta Here for some reason (Gary, it’s been 35 years, nobody cares about Outta Here, it’s NOT iconic), but this is a very solid call.

Verdict:  SCULLY!

Mets vs. Cubs Game Notes for April 21, 2021

The Mets mourn the loss of former coach Tom Robson…He served several roles in the organization including hitting coach and a bench coach from 1999-00 and 2002.

The Mets are in stretch where 18 of their next 28 games will be on the road…New York is 3-4 away from Citi Field in 2021…The Mets are on their first road trip outside the NL or AL East for the first time since 2019…The Mets’ last road trip away from the East Coast was a six-game trip to Colorado and Cincinnati from September 16-22, 2019.

Dominic Smith is batting .295/.358/.557 with 64 runs, 32 doubles, a triple, 23 homers, 73 RBI, 35 walks and a .916 OPS in 150 games since the start of the 2019 season…This includes a .300/.381/.511 slash line against fellow southpaws and a .294/.351/.571 mark against right-handers and yet wasn’t allowed to play on Opening Day 2020 nor 2021.

Former Met Jesse Orosco was born on this day in 1957…Orosco appeared in 372 games with the Mets and went 47-47 and a 2.73 ERA (181 earned runs/595.2 innings) with 240 walks and 506 strikeouts…He is fourth all-time in Mets history with 107 saves…Overall, Orosco spent 24 years in the major leagues, going 87-80 with a 3.16 ERA…He appeared in a major league record 1,252 career games…For cool photos and interactive history information on the Mets, please visit the Mets Virtual Vault at metsheritage.com.

Peter K. Alonso was 0-4, K yesterday

Pete has hit two home runs.  Today is April 21.

WHY does Jacob deGrom want an extra day between starts?

Scully, look at this.

Yes, Mulder, I saw it.  Jacob would like an extra day between starts.

Scully, don’t be so gullible.

Mulder, Rojas said “Jake this time wanted the extra day, and it keeps Lucchesi in line too. So it just worked out well.”

You think the Mets care about Joey Luchchesi, Scully?

Mulder, the Mets care about deGrom, and if wants an extra day he should get one.

Scully, how long have you been watching baseball?

Since the 80’s.

Well Scully, I have been watching since 1977 and I cannot think of one single instance of a pitcher ASKING for an extra day.

Well…now that you say that….

And Scully, if the truth is that deGrom ASKED for a day, why was the initial story that the Mets were holding him back on purpose to face the division rival Nationals

Mulder, you know the Mets often don’t have their story straight

EXACTLY Scully.  They don’t have their story straight.

What do YOU think Mulder?

What do I think Scully?  I think someone let deGrom pitch in 30 degree weather.  I think someone let deGrom throw 100 miles an hour all spring.

But he’s been great Mulder.  The weather didn’t bother him, he struck out 14.  And you sounded like a crazy person worrying about the 100 mph all Spring.  He’s fine Mulder.

And Santana was fine after throwing 134 pitches…he was great in that next start, and was fine….until someone stepped on his foot.  It was Santana’s foot that ended his career, right Scully.  The truth is out there Scully.  Unfortunately, unless we can get Adam Rubin to come back. the existing version of the Mets beat isn’t likely to figure this one out.    They accept whatever version of the truth the Mets feed them, even if the two versions don’t reconcile.   The truth is out there Scully.

Matt Harvey pitched in Miami. How did he do? You’ll look!

The Dark Knight returned as he always did, and the Orioles announcers who I think are named Bo and Luke (how far south IS Baltimore??) were very excited about these stats.

The Orioles spotted Matty Baseball to a 3 run lead and he’s looking confident!

With one out, Matt gave up one of those pesky doub….oh wait…

….its a clown show out there and the runner will make it all the way to third!

How does Matt do with runners on base?  Followers of my blog know the answer.

A single and now it’s 3-1!

And UH OH………

….no HE MADE THE CATCH!

and Matt Harvey is pleased!

Whew.  On to the second.

Now look at the picture below.   See all the humans?  That’s a lot of humans, isn’t it?   Some of them are Marlins, because the 7 and 8 hitters got back to back hits.

Fortunately for TDK the NL doesn’t DH…so Don Mattingly has his pitcher, who I think is Dennis DeYoung the singer from Styx, bunt….of course that’s stupid and now there are 2 out and then 3 out.  Dumb.  Should have let Mr. Roboto swing the bat.

On to the third.  Two Orioles Guys hit HRs so Matt has a FOUR run lead now.  No way he blows that.

In the third…some balls on bats and some suspect gloves leads to two on with one out…but TDK strikes out the next two batters and looks at the camera as if to tell a fat blogger to STFU

Matt you did throw like seven hundred pitches that inning but OK bro, on to the 4th where The Real Deal has a 6-1 lead.  Not much to tell you – shoddy defense gets a runner on but Matt wipes it out with a DP (Matt probably loves a good DP) and then another K.

Even the most cynical Matt Harvey watcher, which by the way is me, must admit that he’s better with Baltimore than he was with KC.  He’s like “first half of the Anaheim season” shaky now.  But remember that season ended with a trip to Salt Lake and being left off the Las Vegas 51s playoff roster.  While making $11,000,000.

On to the 5th….

And suddenly there are two on.

Somebody (a Marlin, who cares) hits a ground ball to SS and the Orioles SS has the range of @mediagoon out there and what should be an out scores a run and MH does not look happy about it.

And here’s Matt’s worst nightmare…just one out to go and a Mound Visit!

Look at Matt’s face.  He’s like Jeepers Christmas, what do I have to do?

Matt listened to the great advice and did what he was told.  It’s a ground ball to SS and this time Stone Feet moves and makes the play.  Matt is through 5!

But seriously, he looks exhausted.  Like no schtick, he looks reallllly exhausted.  Like way more than he should.

Why don’t you have lungs Matt?  You know I am always suspicious.  I AM SUSPICUOUS.  WHY ARE YOU OUT OF BREATH?

Anyway, the Orioles batted for him.

5 innings, 3 runs all earned, zero walks, 4Ks on EIGHT hits.  Now some of those “hits” were because of possibly the worst defense I have ever seen, so even I will stick up for Matt.

Anyway, hopefully the Orioles hold on, Matt would probably like to hit South Beach tonight.  There is a burrito place he likes.  Hurry this up.

I will update the post once the game is final or when I wake up in the morning to tell you what happened.

Update: the Orioles hung on and Matt got his win! Burritos for everyone!
