Cool old photo of the Shea Stadium scoreboard in 1965

Some of us were chatting in the comments section about pre-renovated Shea.  The great site Forgotten New York has the picture below:

Check out a few things…the National League is listed on the left side.  In later years it was on the right.  I wonder why they flipped that?   Even Mets Police 1970 wouldn’t have complained about that.

I love the big text message board that was replaced by a Budweiser ad at some point.  It would take forever to put a message  up there, they had to do it one letter at a time, scrolling through each letter like you would on a video game back in the day.

Check out the “video screen” up top.  That was gone before my day.  I recall that being a clock in the late 70’s, and later a Mets logo.

Note the way the pitchers are logged.  The pitcher uniform number is not being displayed, but rather a code which you would then look up in a scorebook.  I recall being at some other stadium semi-recently and finding it interesting.  Philly maybe.

I don’t recall there being a message area on the bottom left of the scoreboard.   I know the light panels were replaced at some point after the 1980’s, but the design in the picture is the one I grew up with (well without the video screen).

I’m so tempted to go sarcastic about the message in the lower left but I will refrain.

Here’s another pic (in color) of the scoreboard. Thanks to Corey for the links.

I really should go dig and see if there are pictures of me as a kid at a Mets game, and I really need to tell the Seaver story – maybe when the site gets a little bigger.

I was thinking about the now-removed fanbrick.  When I do the 10th anniversary MetsPolice column in 2018, that photo’s gonna be a nice rarity isn’t it?

Mets jerseys with Osh41 (part 4)

Another in a series of looks at uniforms of the past with Osh41.  Take it away…

The year was 1978 and the Mets were entering the first season of the ‘post Seaver’ era.  So what did the Mets do?  That’s right they changed their uniforms!!  Welcome to another uniform discussion with osh41.

The 1978 -82 home and road 1978 -81uniforms were a drastic departure from Mets uniforms from 1962-1977.  Gone were the button up jerseys – they were replaced by a pullover style for home and road with two buttons at the top.  The sleeve edges and collars were graced by a blue/orange/blue border.  Hey it could have been worse – at least they kept wearing belts and not the awful snap pants like many other clubs of the era.

In 1979 the Mets introduced (much to my dismay) – names to the backs of both road and home uniforms.  The names were stitched to a nameplate and then stitched to the uniform backs – which looked kind of awkward on the home pinstripes.

The rest of the MetsPolice and I are big advocates of the no name on back style – at least at home – if you don’t know your team by uniform number alone you should rethink your fandom.  And hey Fred and Jeff – make people buy scorecards!

For fans of MetsPolice and my generation these uniforms represent absolute futility – arguably the worst era in Mets history – trust me on one you fans born post 1986.  The early Mets of the 60’s were at least lovable – they were an expansion team after all – they were expected to be bad.  This uniform experienced no glory at all – just punch lines.

One week until the Mets opener!

I’m psyched for next week!   I’m in a good mood for a Monday, so let’s start he day off with some frivolity.  Adam sent me this about the Blue Cap Army meetup.

Shannon – Please don’t ban me from the meetup but if it’s cool / cold out I’ll have my new 2009 bullpen cap and my black pullover windbreaker.  If it’s nice though, I’ll have my Strawberry orange jersey on for sure.

As a consolation prize, I’m sending you a pic from the last day at Shea with no one wearing a jersey or shirt with black in it (although that might be a black hat on backwards on my friend Arnold) and a pic of my daughter dreaming of a Mets Championship.

Adam

As I mentioned last week…the Blue Cap Army meetup is about a good time. There will be no bagging on each others clothes, and we’re not there to be a meeting of the negative nitpickers.   However, I will make fun of your friend’s cap on the blog right now.  Dude, an awesome road jersey with a black cap?

Actually, I take it back.  Arnold looks like he could beat me up with one punch.  Arnold, it looks great.  Wear whatever you want.     Hmm, maybe I won’t wear my Mets Police jersey to the game.

Yet even more Yankee Stadium deconstruction pictures

Here’s one last set of Yankee Stadium photos, these were taken by my buddy.  He must have had his camera on super-setting which makes it a large file, which slows down the blog (yes I shrunk it) so I’ll just share the best and that should just about wrap it up for Yankee Stadium Demolition pics for the rest of the century.

In the interest of not slowing down the main page, you’ll find the pictures after the jump:
