Rainouts And Abusing The Fans

So the Mets decided to open the gate last night.

I don’t know exactly when the postponement decision was made, but Metsblog’s article announcing the postponement is time stamped 7:23pm.   The press release on Mets.com is dated 7:14.

So FOUR minutes after the scheduled first pitch they decided the forecast was so bad that they should throw in the towel?

At 4pm did they have some “window” where they thought they could play – or is it just fun and profitable to make people haul out to Citi Field, pay whatever it is to park these days, maybe buy a beer and a dog.   Hey an extra $40 out any sucker is better than zero, right?

Let’s make everyone come out and sit here, wait FOUR MINUTES and then send them home.

This isn’t just a Mets thing, it’s all the teams and it’s wrong.  Just call the game early.

For those who emailed me about having tickets for last night but not being able to use them tonight…the official policy is:

In the event a regulation game as defined by Major League Baseball is not played due to weather, Act of God, or any other reason, then the ticket will not be subject to any refund but will constitute a rain check that can be either (1) used for admission to the rescheduled game, if any, subject to certain doubleheader limitations (see below), or (2) exchanged for a same price ticket for any regular season Mets home game within 12 months of the originally scheduled game, subject to availability.

"Citi Field Empty" Fan Protest

I got an email from the organizers of Citi Field Empty.

They are asking that Mets fans not show up for the game at Citi Field on September 8th to protest ownership, and create some embarrassing media coverage for the team.

..

My take:

The best they can hope for is a few mentions, probably on on-line versions of the newspaper columns.  They might even get a few today (a few reporters check out Mets Police, much like I check out the reporter blogs, and that’s how the world works).   Today being in essence a day after an off-day they might get a mention this morning – but once 12:10 hits that window will have closed.

Will the protest work?  Nope.  People aren’t going to eat their tickets.   Also, the mainstream media will just print that “39,000” attended the game.   See my posts from last year about a “Howie Rose 40,000.”  The paid attendance number is what gets reported.

Even if nobody showed, nothing would change.  Jeff Wilpon isn’t selling a baseball team just because people don’t like him.  In fact, I’d be more worried about a panic trade/signing to shut up the fans.  What the organization needs is someone with long term wisdom to decide if the potential of 10 years of Jon Niese (with the first 6 inexpensive) is greater than the value of a Roy Halladay.  That kind of thing.  Halladay shuts the fans up, but might be the wrong move.  See the 1980’s Yankees for the wrong way to do it, and the Gene Michael Yankees for the right way.

One of my deals with myself is that I don’t want to hurt the Mets.   The end goal of this blog is for the Mets to run off 10 straight championships while wearing blue pinstriped home uniforms – then I’ll throw a big party at the Tom Seaver statue in front of Citi Field and call it a day.   I want the Mets to succeed, I don’t wish to be an enemy of the franchise.

However, as the leader of the cranks – I felt I should share this one with you.

Skeptical Rockies fans

I'm on a 7 right now

There's some Rockies fans heading to the game.

I say rained out.

I show them the MLB app.

They still don't belive me. They call their friend to check.

I show them the story on metsblog. Now they believe me.

You've got Colorado street cred Matt Cerrone!

Don’t Let Charlie Samuels See These New York Mets Hats

Thanks to Matt Cerrone over at Metsblog for the link to Mets Police today – and also for linking to this one below.  I would be sad had I missed this one:

New Era NY Mets ‘Velcro Patch’ 59Fifty Fitted Hats

It seems like a joke  A cap with velcro stuff so that you can make your own ugly Mets hat.

At least it’s blue.

When these come out in black I can see the Mets will start wearing them and allowing any random collection of logos.

So..Where’s All The Mets Stuff We Were Promised

I haven’t been to Citi this week (will be there tomorrow, camera in hand) – but from what I’m hearing, the Mets have yet to add any (noticeable) Mets memorabilia to Citi Field.

There had been talk that we would see more “Mets stuff” after the All-Star Break.

Can it really be that hard/expensive to order some pictures and banners?

Maybe I misunderstood the timetable.  Maybe readers are lying to me to make me look bad.  Maybe the Mets didn’t actually add anything.  I’ll know tomorrow.

Thanks to Mets Walk-offs, a great blog, and a great “different” blog (writes about different things than the typical Mets blog), for the info.  Walk-offs writes about the lack of a Mets HOF, the Royals HOF, and who should be added to the Mets HOF.

As I wrote recently, I think the Mets should have a physical Hall.
