Tom Seaver’s last start as a Met – one mysterious inning

I think a lot about April 5, 1983 – my favorite day at a Mets game ever (the return of Tom Seaver).

The other day I started wondering about Tom’s final game as a Met.  We didn’t know it was going to be his final game and were all kinda stunned when he was left unprotected and then QUITE MAD when he was grabbed by the White Sox.

So I thought I would do a post about his final game.  I was hoping I would find some sort of gem – like his start on September 24th.  8 innings of 1 run ball for his 9th win.  Mike Torrez tried his damndest to blow the game, giving up FIVE in the 9th but the Mets won 7-6 and Seaver got the W.

Interestingly the SP in that game for the Cubs was 20 year old Don Schulze….kids, I’ll tell you about Don Schulze and Seaver when we get to 1987….

…but for now let’s stay in 1983.

So there you have Seaver pitching a gem….but he comes back to pitch one more start on 6 Days rest.

His line?  ONE inning. Three up, three down.

And that was it.  12,144 on a Saturday afternoon at Shea saw one last inning from The Franchise and then he was gone.

Did Tom know?  Did Cashen let him know?

Was Tom hurt?

Why get one inning in on 6 days rest?

Did Tom want to say goodbye to us and we didn’t know?

Why Tom?  Why?

I couldn’t find any game stories.  The boxscore lists the weather as “unknown” but the game time is 2:21 so I doubt there was a massive rain delay, and the opposing pitcher Bill Gullickson stuck around for 6.

I went to twitter….and good ol’ @metsbooth is better at the internet than I am.

And there ya have it. Just like that The Franchise was gone. But he’d be back….in 1987…..almost. A story for another day.

Osh41 sent me a longer version of the article from the NYT Archives…apparently there WAS a rain delay that day…but later…and they actually postponed Game 2 of the doubleheader to the next day after a two hour rain delay.  In the article, Tom looks forward to winning 300 wins…which I guess he will do for the 1985 Mets.  I can’t wait!

Mets Police Morning Laziness: the Mets adopt the Dennis system

SLACKISH REACTION:   My friends the Mets invited me to something!  They must have been reading the blog over the winter and felt bad.  Thanks Mets!

There’s an article or two about The Mets Mindset which is so stupid I can’t even make fun of it.  Just take every letter and…well…it’s basically this but at least in the D.E.N,N.I.S. system you hook up with women.

I really can’t even be bothered to make fun of MINDSET – I for integrity and T for Try to Sign Your Ex-Players and such.   This will be as meaningful as Prevention and Recovery when the Mets decided they would no longer suffer injuries.

Also we are told that the DENNIS system is part of…..wait for it….a new culture!  STFU with New Culture every year Mets.

Would you even recognize this man?

The Mets seem to have a David Thompson.

Yucky Todd Ziele shirt

No we are not putting Rey Ordoñez on the Mount Rushmore of Mets Infielders.

Baseball Stars: would you even recognize this person at the supermarket?

Be honest.  Be brutally honest.  Take this out of context – pretend you are not seeing it on a blog called (Redacted) Police.  Would you recognize this man at the supermarket?   Even now are you SURE you think it is who you think it is…maybe I am messing with you.

You might.  It’s a lot easier to recognize him when you can see his long blonde locks.  But with his hair like this…I dunno.  You might because the man is tall and in shape and that alone might catch your eye…but I dunno.

Now this next person I had to let a :30 commercial play through while I had another tab open – thats what your money got you Mr. Advertiser…and MLB you are insane that you put your clips behind such things as your sport dies….

Do you recognize this baseball star?  (This is a still not a video)

Any idea?

Baseball has done a terrible job of marketing its stars.  That second guy just signed a $300M contract.  As for the man at the top of the post….you tell me who it is….are you sure???

Sterling or Scully: Someone calls a HR by whoever David Thompson of the Mets is

Here’s a fun edition of Sterling or Scully…who is this doing PBP?  And who the hell is this guy posing as an Actual Met?

Number 87 on your scorecard, number 1 in your hearts.

I don’t love this call but as I laid out the rules there is only Sterling or Scully, no middle ground…and this call is not a Sterling autopilot so….

VERDICT: Scully. Maybe Dana Scully of the X-Files but Scully.

The really scary thing…..@mediagoon is going to own a David Thompson Game Used jersey.
