Do the Mets bosses really think this uniform looks good?

I was working on this on Friday, then the Reyes thing happened, but I’m still fired up about this.

I had to stop watching the game on Thursday because I was getting mad.

Do Fred and Jeff look at this uniform combination and think – hey those high black stirrups look good?  How about that black undershirt?

I sort of understand that a civilian might want to wear black, but the white and blue color scheme of the Mets is so wonderful, why do they mess around?  I’m a fan of high stirrups, but these black ones look terrible.  The black undershirt?  Terrible!

I just need someone to explain it to me.  Is it sales?  Do wearing the hybrid cap and black socks really move the profit margins?  I thought Jeff loved the 1980’s Mets…you’re the boss dude, just tell everyone “we’re going back to blue.”   Just do it.  Everyone who wants a black John Franco jersey has one.  Sell the blue.   I gave in on the pinstripes, now meet me half way and wear blue.   Eve the BP version of the blue (which has black) would look better if you could lose the orange and black underarm clutter.

Thanks to Aaron Doster who has been taking great photos down at spring training, and hooked me up with this shot.  You can find more at flickr.com/teamdoster.

  1. it’s marketing. some of it may be the Mets, and some may be MLB. But it’s marketing. why did your kid get the new BP cap instead of the all blue cap that you’re championing for? Why do I have 3 relatively new Mets home jerseys instead of one or two (ok, part of that was because they were on sale)? it’s marketing, and it’s league-wide. I am a bit surprised that we don’t see the Mets playing in their BP jerseys for Spring home games like some teams do and almost all did. But then again, the snow whites look better than those.

    1. I was telling him yesterday we need to go get some blue caps (I need a newer one too, the present one is from the 90’s) – he was asking if he could wear his blue Mr. Met cap. That one I bought him at Citi one day game when the sun was blaring. It’s a cool cap that I think would make a Sunday alt.

  2. I think there may be some leadway with dress (the undershirts) in Spring. Personal choice and all. and MLB marketing probably plays in a bit as well.

I can’t see how them wearing them helps sales though. People are sheep and will buy what you tell them to buy/make available, for the most part.

  3. having the players wear this ugly stuff will subliminally tell people to buy it. if they never wore those ugly BP caps, would anyone buy them? people buy it because the players wear it.

  4. dyhrdmet,
I believe Mets Police Junior has a two-tone alt cap (black w/blue brim) not a BP cap

    Ceetar,
I remember back in the day (mid-late ’70s) players wearing a mix of Ts during regular season games. Seemingly according to personal preference. Used to see a lot more orange back then.

  5. I’m not crazy about them, but I can live with the two-tone caps (they’re fine as a road cap and bearable as an alt). Just lose the black sleeves & socks with the white or pinstriped home unis. That’s just hideous.

IIRC, you can blame John Franco for that. On picture day in ’98 when the hybrids first came to be, he wondered aloud why the (blue) socks, shoes, and belts they wore didn’t match the new black caps (which I thought was a silly point to begin with because the blue bill takes care of that). Early in the season, they still wore blue sleeves and socks every day but then brought in the black ones at some point.
