I’d like to see standings flags on top of Citi Field

One of the things I liked about Fake New Yankee Stadium last year were the pretty colored flags on top of the stadium.   If only the Mets could do something like that…

…oh wait, we had that at Shea for all the years I was there and there were 30+ of those years.

It’s a minor point, and I’m not anti-American flag, but why can’t we have both?

Speaking of flags…this is interesting from the archives, in this article from 1961 how about this quote from someone named Tom Meany who is listed as a “baseball author”:

…put up flagstaffs for 24 pennants.  That’s how many the Dodgers and Giants won….we claim them all.

  1. It’s gotta be all or nothing in the embracing history thing. I wouldn’t hate having the Dodgers and Giants pennants up there (gotta be less prominent than the Mets 2 obviously) even if it takes away from my insistance that the Yankees only lead 8-2 in championships. Make sure you get the Negro Leagues and even the ancient American Association and Federal league teams of the NYC area. I’ll leave it to your discretion whether the Newark Pepper count as NYC baseball.

How about just flags from each team? (which is what the Yankees did last year right?) I’m sure people will say we stole it from them even if we did it first, but hey. How about the flags on the Pepsi Porch be the standings of the NL East?

    1. I would include Negro leagues. I am not familiar with the NY area teams and how often they won or not.

I don’t know if I want old NY Giants or Brooklyn flags up there…might be fun occasionally, but I’d liek to just have the old standings back. The ones at Fake Yankee look great.

  2. I simply do not like that the American Flag seems hidden at CitiField……its should be more in the center of the stadium. I sure they can mount it somewhere. Its just lost at CitiField and that is a shame.

Agree the pepsi porch could show the current standings.

  3. The used to fly each teams pennant at Shea. Did they stop some time before they moved?

  4. I can’t recall when exactly they switched from team flags to American flags. I can make a reasonable guess though. Probably concides with god bless america.

Maybe they could turn the bullpen entrance into a montage of old NY baseball. One day that area will be really cool to enter from, but right now it’s sorta the forgotten gate. There is a good amount of space there, so they could probably figure out something, and I do kinda like the idea of entering the Mets home through the Giants/Dodgers/etc because that’s basically how the Mets came into the league, through NY baseball and the Giants and Dodgers.

    1. in my photos from the last game at Shea there are American flags and not standings flags. I don’t have a shot including the flags from the opener.

  5. Add one more flag for the pennant-winning 1884 New York Metropolitans (and wouldn’t it be awesome if the Mets claimed their history as well, perhaps some vintage 19th century photos in the museum?).
