From the other day…cool stuff about the Formerlys. I guess in about 10 years we’ll feel the same way about the Mercury Mets.
Four short years later, the Giants moved 3,000 miles away and my father and I were stuck listening to Les Keiter’s recreations of the games on WINS, punctuated by amateurish radio sound effects and blatant exaggeration (no fly ball failed to get to the warning track).
via A New Yorker explains why he still roots for the San Francisco Giants – ESPN New York.
Do you think Howie will move to Mercury or stay behind to do recreations?
I think Fran Healy would be a great choice for the Mercs, and Howie could do recreations. Or maybe Howie could just translate Yankee games from Sterlingese.
In all seriousness it must have been odd in 1962 to see the old team play in “their’ ballpark against another team with “their” logo on the caps.
Here’s a photo I cribbed from the awesome Mets Photos. Do me a favor and go check out Michael Baron’s awesome site.
The best part for me was the end. His dad had moved on to the Mets, and couldn’t understand why his son still followed the Giants. For the son, it was all about his dad.
And for me now, this is the real, and the only real, value of the Mets. As an expansion team playing basically on the verge of Long Island, not in a neighborhood but in a tangle of suburban traffic, I’m not interested. But, if I think of the Mets as the living link to a lot of caring fans all throughout the heart of the city, from Dodger fans in Bay Ridge Brooklyn, to Giants fans in upper Manhattan, the Mets represent a beautiful yet imperfect pastiche, …. to me at least.
