2010 New York Mets Turkeys: Readers additions

Some more Mets Turkeys rolled in…

Shannon:

Several more irksome turkey candidates:

1. Pepe Mangual. 1976 replacement for the popular but aging Del Unser, acquired from Expos, I believe. Fast, but stunk.

2. Don Hahn (early 70s). Some thought he was the next Willie Mays. Not so much.

3. Steve Chilcott who I believe we drafted instead of that Reggie Jackson fellow.

4. Steve Henderson, flash in the pan we received for Seaver (with others–Flynn, Zachry, Norman).

(Hey he could be the hitting coach…)

5. I would say Rey Ordonez. We disdained the possibility of getting A-Rod because we had this overrated fellow.

(Shannon:  That and he wanted an A-Rod store which would now be demolished.  At Citi Field you’d never notice the A-Rod store.   Reyes at 2B, Wright at 3B and A-Rod at SS might have done OK.)

6. Brian Giles was a key disappointment circa 1984.

7. Lee Mazzilli curiously flopped after a fine start. He peaked at what, 24? Odd.

(Hey!!!!!)

8. Richie Hebner was once considered a key acquisition.

9. Pat Zachry, self-inflicted injury (broken foot in dugout, I believe) makes one a turkey.

10. Randy Jones was certainly a turkey for us. (Cy Young with San Diego, 8-18 in Flushing.)

11. Pete Falcone was once considered promising.

12. As was Nino Espinosa.

As you can see, I’ve had a difficult time with Mets fandom. And a joyous one.

Cheers,

Joe

Steve added Vince Coleman and Mo Vaughn. Since I’m in Terry’s corner I’ll fight with anyone who got the man fired.

Charles made his own style list which partially overlaps with some already named but here goes…

1B- Mo Vaughn Was brought in to lead, ate instead. President of the “New” Terry Collins Fan Club

Runner – Up Carlos Delgado Drove a wedge in the clubhouse, Called Omar prejudiced. Did hit ok when he wanted too.

2B- Kaz Matsui Hyped to the world. Especially by Bruce Wilpon. (Yes, I said Bruce) Couldnt hit ( expect on opening day) scared to
stay in on a double play. A disaster.

Runner Up Roberto Alomar Lost his talent when putting on a Met uniform. Was never comfortable in NY. Sadly a possible HOFer
who just didnt fit here.

SS- Tony Fernandez A .300 except when he was traded to the Mets, openly hated playing here. Hit 225 in 200 ABs
Then dealt to Toronto where he went back to being a .300 hitter.

Runner Up (Tie) Kaz Matsui See Above and Bruce Wilpon

3B Richie Hebner I can do a Richer Hebner impersonation! Woof Woof Woof !! A grave digger who rather dig graves then
scoop ground balls in NY.

Runner Up Bobby Bonilla I actually like Bonilla. He did… well what he normally did, when he played, good hitter, average in the
field except dont let him show you the Bronx

OF Kevin McReynolds When asked by the late, great Bob Murphy on the post game show in 1988 after losing game 7 in the playoffs to the Dodgers if he was upset, he replied, No, not really we tried hard, Im getting ready for duck hunting season.

OF Jason Tyner High draft pick. Nice kid Couldnt drive the ball….past second base.

OF Shinjo Takahtsu Stupid Orange bands Stupid orange hair Liked to jump in the air after a catch. Horrible player

C Jeff Wilpon Wait, did he play or didnt he?

Announcers Fran Healy !!!! No question

Runner up Lorn Brown

Tom didn’t elaborate on his list: Joe Torre, Dean Chance and Ryan Thompson. I assume Ryan for the same reason I added Jeff Kent.  (I’d STILL rather have David Cone at 47 years old).  I had to look Dean Chance up.    I guess Tom didn’t like either of Dean’s innings in 1970 (career Mets total of 2 IP)

Richard checked in…

Hello Shannon,

I have some nominations for all-time Mets turkeys in order of priority in my opinion:

1. Oliver Perez

2. Francisco Rodriguez

3. Vince Coleman

4. Juan Samuel

5. Robbie Alomar

6. Victor Zambrano

7. J.J. Putz

8. Rey Ordonez

Bobby Bonilla is on the bubble because of his personality and bloated contract. Mo Vaughn because of his contract and bloated size is also on the bubble.

..

That’s a wrap on Turkeys for this year.  Hopefully there will be no new additions for 2011.
